MEANS FOR CENTERING AND AITACHING SOCKETS T0 LAMP-BOWLS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,807, dated April 4, 1882. Application filed July 15, 18:81. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW G. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Centering and Attaching Sockets to Lamp-Bowls; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in centering and attaching sockets to lam p-bowls, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, on which Figure 1 represents aeentral longitudinal section of alamp-bowl and peg, with its socket centered and secured by means of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line 0 D, also shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on theline E F, also shown in Fig. 1.

(t represents an ordinary glass lamp-bowl, with its central bottom peg, b, as shown.

a represents an annular projection on the under side of the bowl (1, which is intended for the purpose of centering the socket c concentric with the peg 1) previous to securing said socket, by means of plaster-of-pa-ris or other suitable cement or material, to the glass bowl a,- but, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, the annular proj ection a is considerably smaller thanthe upper edge, 0, of the socket 0, such being the case with most of the bowls and sockets furnished by the trade, and consequently the said rim a will not serve as a centering-edge for the socket c.

To enable the socket c to be centered and'secured concentrically with the peg b independent of the annular edge a is the object of my invention, for which purpose I employ a disk or washer, d, preferably punched out of sheet metal, and provided centrally with a scalloped perforation, d d, the points d d of which rest against the circumference of thecentral peg, b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer circumference of the washer dis adapted to fit snugly against the interior of the socket c, as shown.

d d are perforations on the outer periphcry of the washer d to permit the superfluous plaster to pass out when the socket c is pushed in place around the central peg, b. The central perforations, d d, of said washer d also serve for a similar purpose.

To center the socket c to the bowl a and its peg b, I first till the socket c with plaster-0t paris, or other suitable adhesive or fastening compound, alter which 1 press the washer (Z firmly in place within the socket c, and the latter will be properly centered by forcingthe peg I) through the central perforation in the washer d and into the plaster within the socket c.

It so desired, the socket cmay be secured to the bowl a, without the need of plaster-of-paris, by the use of a secondary washer, c, secured to the interior of the socket c, and provided with a central perforation, e, otapproximately oblongontliue, which is adapted to fit over the similarly-shaped end b of the peg b, and to be pushed over the same until the annular groove 1) on said peg 1) comes opposite to the perforated washer e, when the socket 0 may belocked securely to the peg b and its bowl or simply by turning the socket c one-fourth of a revolution (more or less) around its axis, as shown in Fig. 3.

The lock-washer 0 may be used with or withoutplaster-of-paris, as may be desired. f represents the plaster-of-paris.

What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-- 1. The combination, with the socket'c and the bowl, having a peg b, of the centering disk or washer d, centrally perforated and engaging the peg of the bowl and resting at its outer edge against the socket, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the peg or projection b b b on a lamp-bowl, the socket c, centering-washer d (1, and fastening-washer e e, as and for the purpose set forth.
