Description

vention is to provide a case of simple and UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARBOR R. CHISHOLM, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed June 1,
The invention relates to receptacles adapted to contain face powder and the like for personal use, and the object of the ininexpensive construction adapted to contain a charge of loose powder presented for convenient access in the small quantities required, while holding the bulk of the charge against accidental delivery due to the changes in position to which articles of this character are necessarily liable.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts by which the above objects are obtained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accom anying drawings form a part of this speci cation and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure 1 is an edge view of the case with the cover in place.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the body of the case with the cover removed.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the interior of the cover.
The remaining figures are on an exaggeratcd scale.
Figure 4 is a, diametrical section through the complete case.
Figure 5 is a corresponding section of a ring or bezel forming part of the cover.
Figure 6 is a sinnlar section through a diaphragm or partition forming part of the body of the case.
Similar reference numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The main portion of the body of the case is a shell of sheet metal cut and shaped by suitable dies to the form shown, having an outwardly denied or convex bottom 10 and a vertical annular flange 11 wit-h an off-set bead 12 at the junction of those members.
The cover is similarly formed having :1 top 13 and a vertically depending flange 14 with a bead 15 at their junction. The flange 14 incloses the flange 11 closely but with. liberty to permit the easy separation of the cover and body, and the bead 12 serves as a seat for the rim of the flange 14 when the cover is a plied. The top 13 of the cover is preferably domed outwardly to correspond symmetrically wlth the bottom 10.
In the interior of the cover is a mirror 16 1927. Serial No. 195,608.
of circular form held in place by a ring or bezel 17, which is forced into position within the flange 14 and held therein by the strong frictional contact thus induced.
A iorizontally disposed partition or diaphragm in the upper portion of the body serves with the latter asa receptacle for the powder and comprises a cylindrical flange or lip 18 matching closely to and within the flange 11 and having a rounded annular shoulder 19 at the top from which extends a depressed conical deck 20 having a circular central aperture 21.
The space between the deck 20 and mirror 16 serves as an inclosure for the powder puff or pad, not shown, when the cover is placed on the body, and the space between the deck 20 and bottom 10 serves as an annular pocket in which the charge is retained in the various angular positions assumed by the ease in service.
The charge of loose powder is supplied through the aperture 21 and is presented thereto for easy access by the puff as will be understood.
It will be noted that all the parts, excepting the mirror 16 are of thin sheet metal easily formed by dies and stamping methods, and are held in position by frictional engagement with each other without other fastening means, and also that all the parts are easily and quickly assembled with little labor, thus providing an efiicient and attractive case at a minimum of production cost.
Instead of cm loying the removable cover held to the body telescopically, as shown, the. cover and body may be joined by a hinge or other preferred means.
The dished form of the bottom 10 immediately below the aperture 21 when the case is held horizontally tends to collect the powder at that point easily accessible to the pull, as will be noted.
I claim:-
The vanity case described roniprising a circular body portion having a dished botloni and an annular vertical flange thereon with an outwardly projecting head at the junction of said vertical flange and bottom and formed integrally with said vertical flange and bottom, a diaphragm in said body consisting of a vertical lip matching closely Q a circular cover within said vertical flange and a downwardly inclined conical deck integral with said lip and having a central aperture therein, forming with said bottom an annular pocket, and rtion having a top and an annular de flange thereon inte a1 therewith an adapted removably to in use and engage said vertical flange and to seat flange.
In testimon that I claim the invention I aflix my signature hereto.
above set f0 ARBOR R. CHISHOLM.
dmg said mirror in place by 10 within said vertical flange and a downwardly on said head a mirror in said cover and a inclined conical deck integral with said lip bezel for holding said mirror in place by 10 and having a central aperture therein, formfrictional engagement with said depending ing with said bottom an annular pocket, and flange.
5 a. circular cover ortion having a top and In testimon that I claim the invention an annular de en ing flange thereon inte a1 above set fort I aflix my signature hereto. therewith an adapted removably to inc use and engage said vertical flange and to seat AKRON R. CHISHOLM.
