Another very important object of the invention lies in the provision of a device of this nature with a chain trained in a pre determined orbit and connected with a bral-:-
l ing mechanism which will operate when the chain moves in one direction for retarding the movement of the chain, but which will be in-eli'ective when the chain moves in the opposite direction.
Another veryimportant object of the invention lies in the provision of a structure of this naturewith means which is actuated upon the opening and closing of a door and which when actuated by the closing of the door will set into operation a braking mechanism for retarding the closing movement of the door and which when moved by the opening of the door will release the braking mechanism. Another very important object of the invention lies in the provision of a device of this nature which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, and otherwise well 30 adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more. fully described.

The spring 26 normally holds the member 19 in the position shown in Figure 1 when the door 28 is so open. This door 28 is normally urged to a closed position in any suitable manner such as by a spring 29. The door 28 is provided with an arm 30 adapted to strike the arm 21 of the member 19 thereby causing the swingas ing of the member 19 and the stretching of the spring 26 for taking up the initial shock of the closing of the door. The projection or arm 30 will then engage another stop proj ection 31 on the chain 17 and urge the chain ice to move in its orbit about they sprockets 11 and 15, simultaneously rotating said sprockets as will be apparent. Fhe chain 17 may be maintained taut through the action of the screw 14 as will be quite apparent without a more detailed description. v
Associated with the shaft 16 l have pro vided a combined clutch and brake mechanism which ll will now describe in detail. the cylinder 33 and a spring pressed member 35 is mounted in the cylinger 33 adjacent said cam surface 34 being normally projected outwardly therefrom. A disc 36 is loosely mounted on the shaft 16 and has av casing 37 fixed thereto as at 38 for housing the cylinder 33 and functions as a drmn. \V hen the shaft 16 rotates in one direction. that when the door is closing, the cylinder 33 will rotate in a countcr-clock-wise direction as shown in Figure 6 thereby wedging the spring pressed member 35 between the cam surface 34 and the interior surface of the drum or casing 37 so that said casing and said disc will rotate with the shaft 16, but when the shaft is retating in the opposite direction it will be seen that this action will not take place, and therefore the shaft and the cylinder 33 will rotate while the drum or casing 37 remains stationary.
A casing 39 is fixed to one side 5 and houses the drum 37 and the disc 36. On the disc 36 there is pivoted a pair of arcuate weight members 40 which are held inwardly by a spring all engaged with the free end thereof. It will be seen, however. that when the disc 36 is rotated as heretofore indicated. because of the clutch engagement of the drum 37 with the cylinder 33, that centrifugal force will urge these weighted arms 40 outwardly to frictionally engage the interior of the casing 39, thereby causing the braking action to retard the motion of the shaft 16 and the motion of the chain 17 and consequently retard the closing motion of the door 28 as will be apparent. In order to insure the closing of the door 28 I associate with the other end of the shaft a coil spring 42 which has one end anchored thereto and the other end anchored in a casing 43. This coil spring will be wound up when the door is open and thus when the door closes by the engagement with the arm 21 as heretofore indicated the spring will slowly bring the door to a closed position.
lVhen the screen door is opened it moves the chain 30 by abutting the member 18 and will position the parts as shown in Figure 1 moving the bell crank 23 in a position to prevent the spring 42 from moving the chain back to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 after the door 28 has been free from the device as illustrated in Figure 8, that is the projection 24 will engage in a notch in one link of the chain from which it will be raised when the door slams closed and hits the arm 21 thereby swinging the member 19 so that the arm 22 raises the bell crank 23 to disengage the projection 24 from said notch in the chain 17.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of this invention will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details ot construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is 1. A device of the class described including, in combination, a. frame, a pair of sprockets mounted in the frame, a chain trained over the sprockets, door engaging means on the chain, a shaft extending from one of the sprocket-s, a cylinder on said shaft having a notch with a cam surface adjacent thereto, a spring pressed projecting member mounted in the cylinder adjacent the cam surface, a disc on the shaft, a drum on the disc about the cylinder so that when the cylinder rotates in one direction, said spring pressed member will be projected and wedged between the cam surface and the drum to rotate the drum and disc therewith, and a centrifugal brake mechanism associated with the disc.
2. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, a pair of sprockets mounted in the frame, a chain trained over the sprockets, door engaging means on the chain, a shaft extending from one of the sprockets, a cylinder on said shaft having a notch with a cam surface adjacent thereto, a spring pressed projecting member mounted in the cylinder adjacent the cam surface, a disc on the shaft, a drum on the disc about the cylinder so that when the cylinder rotates in one direction, said spring pressed member will be projected and wedged between the cam surface and the drum to rotate the drum and disc therewith, apair of weight arms pivotally mounted on the disc, spring means connecting the free ends of the arms, and a casing disposed about the arms and being stationary so that upon rotation of the disc the arms will be extended out into frictional engagement with the casing by centrifugal force.
3. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, a pair of sprockets mounted in the frame, a chain trained over the sprockets, door engaging means on the chain, a shaft extending from one of the sprockets, a cylinder on said shaft having a notch with a. cam surface adjacent thereto, a spring pressed projecting member mounted in the cylinder adjacent the cam surface, a disc on the shaft, a drum on the disc about the cylinder so that when the cylinder rotates in one direction, said spring pressed member will. be projected and wedged between the cam surtace and the drum to rotate the drum and disc therewith, a pair of weight arms pivotally mounted on the disc, spring means connecting the free ends of the arms, and a casing disposed about the arms and being I stationary so that upon rotation of the disc the arms will be extended out into trio tional engagement with the casing by centrifugal force, spring means associated with said shaft to be wound up upon the shaft being moved when a door is open, and catch means associated with the chain holding it in a predetermined position after the door has been opened so as to hold said spring means wound up, said last mentioned means being releasable upon the closing of the door.
4. A device of the class described includ ing a. chain means for mounting the chain for movement in a pr-edetern'iined orbit, a doo1.-engaging means on the chain, a braking mechanism and means operatively connecting the braking mechanism with the chain, said braking mechanism comprising means whereby it will retard the movement of the chain in one direction only.
