To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WIN KLER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Berne, in the Swiss Republic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Drying Matrices Used for Stereotype Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
- The apparatus at present used for drying stereotypic matrices have the drawback that the drum, into which the matrices are placed, after the driving mechanism has been put out of gear, mostly stops in such a position that it must be turned by hand into the proper position for taking out the matrices. Further in such apparatus the drum must be put in and out of operation by special mechanism operated by hand or foot and the gas cock, according as the drum is put into or out of operation, has to be turned up' and down, These drawbacks are overcome by the present invention, which rovides a device for automatically arresting the drum in a suitable position for taking out the matrices. The apparatus is, further, so 'constructed that, by closing or opening the door of the drum, the driving mechanism for said drum is simultaneously put in or out of operation. Moreover the door of the drum is connected with the gas cook in such a manner that on opening the, door the cock is closed somewhat, while on closing the door it is opened.
In the drawing showing the invention by way of example Figure 1 is a side elevation and part section, Fig. 2, a front elevation of said apparatus. Figs. 3 and 4c showin two different positions the device for putting the drum in and out of operation and for arresting it in the proper position for taking out the matrices.
1 is the casing in which the drying drum rotates. Said drum is secured on the shaft 2 on the end of which rojecting out of the casing l is mounted a riction disk 3, which can be moved longitudinally on said shaft. In one end position the disk 3 engages with the belt pulley 4 which sits loosely on the shaft 2 and is rotated by a belt or the like. In the opposite end position the disk 3 engages in a disk 5 provided on the casing. In one end position, therefore, the shaft 2 and drum are rotated by the disk 4:, while in the other position-the pulley 3 is retarded by engagement with the fixed disk 5, so that the rotation of the drum is stopped.
The movement of the friction disk 3 is effected by means of the cranks 6, which engage in a groove of the disk Said cranks (3 are secured on a shaft 8 adapted to turn in the bearings 7 and 9. On the shaft 8 is also secured a crank 10, which is connected with the bell crank lever 12, 13 by the rod 11'. The bell crank lever 12, 13 turns about the shaft 1 1. The arm 12 serves as a stop against which the stop 15 on the door 16 strikes, when the door is opened about the hinge 17 By reason of the movement imparted to the bell crank lever 12, 13, connecting rodll, and arm 10, the shaft 8 is turned and the cranks 6 accordingly move the friction disk 3 into engagement with the fixed disk 5, so that the shaft 2 and drum secured thereon are retarded and finally ar-' rested. On closing the door 16 again the shaft 8 is turned back by the spring 18, so that the cranks 6 move the disk 3 into engagement with the pulley 4:.
In order to assure that the drum always stops in sucha position that the matrices can be easily taken out a device is provided which may for example operate as follows: The belt driving the drying drums runs over the disk 19 on which sits a friction disk 20. Both disks are carried by the lever 21 with which a brake block 22 is connected. The levers 21 and 23 are keyed on the shaft 30, which turns in the bearings 21 and 25. Said lever 23 1s connected by the rod 26 with the bell crank lever 27, 28. If now the door 16 is opened, the stop 15 will strike against the crank 12 and, as a consequence, the friction disk 3 will be moved into engagement with the fixed disk 5, so that the drum will be retarded in the manner already explained above. Fig. 4c shows the door completely opened. In this position the stop 15 has passed over the crank 12 so'that the spring 18 can pull the friction disk 3 from the brake disk 5. The stop 15 has also depressed the arm 27. As a consequence the levers 21, 23 will be raised and the disk-20 which is turned by the belt through the disk 19 will" be brought into engagement with the disk 3,
said disk being then rotated until the fric tion disk 20 arrives in the recess 29. The driving action is then interrupted. When the friction disk 20 enters the recess 29 the I never entirely extinguished.
What I claim and desire to secure by 'Let- .ters Patent of the United States is:
1. The described apparatus for drying matrices, comprising in combination a drum.
adapted to contain said matrices, mechanism to rotate said drum, and a device controlled by the operating mechanism for arresting said drum in the proper position for taking out said matrices, substantially as set forth. x
2. The described apparatus for drying matrices, comprising in combination a drum adapted to contain said matrices, mechanism to rotate said drum, a device for arresting said drum in the proper position for taking out said matrices, a door on said drum' and mechanism connected with said door to put the mechanism for rotating said drum in and out of gear according as the door is closed or opened, substantially as set forth. 3. The described apparatus for drying matrices, comprising in combination a drum adapted to contain said matrices, mechanism to rotate said drum, a door to open and close said drum, a device for arresting said drum in the proper positionfor taking out said matrices, a gas cook and nieans adapted to partly close and completely open said gas cock according as said door is opened and closed, substantially as set forth.
4. The described apparatus for drying matrices, comprising in combination a drum adapted to contain said matrices, mechanism to rotate said drum, a device for arresting said drum in the proper position for taking out said matrices, said device consisting of a friction .disk rotating with said drum, a

door to open and close said drum, tappets adapted to be moved on opening said door and thus to longitudinally move said friction disk out of engagement with said friction driving disk and into engagement with a fixed friction disk, substantially as set forth.
Q 6. In a drying apparatus, the combination of a revoluble drum having a door, means 1 for operating the drum, and means controlled by the door for throwing the operating means in and out of operation.
7. In a drying apparatus, the combination 1 of a revoluble drum having a door, means for operating the drum, and means controlled by the door for stopping the drum in a predetermined position.
8. In a drying apparatus, the combination of a revoluble drum having a hinged door, means for operating the drum, and means controlled by the door when opened for first retarding the rotation of the drum and then stopping said drum when in a predetermined position. i
9. In a drying apparatus, the combination of a drum having a hinged door, a gas cock,
and means for operating the gas cock from the door.
