UNITED ST NORMAN IBEATTY AKI'IT, OF WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
GAE TRUCK.
Application filed December 16, 1925. Serial No. 75,863.
This invention relates to car trucks and has for its object the provision of a novel construction whereby wheel changes may be made, when necessary, without completely disassembling the truck. The invention also has for an object the provision of a novel bolster, spring plank, and brake hanger bracket. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a car truck, illustrating the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation;
Figure 3 is a view showing the side frame in section and the bolster and spring plank in elevation;
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the spring plank;
Figure 4 is a detail end elevation of the spring plank and the brake hanger bracket:
Figure 5 is a detail perspective showing one construction for locking the spring plank in the side frame.
In'the drawings. the numeral 1 designates the side frame having integral journal boxes 2, and of any approved design providing an opening 3 to receive the ends of the spring plank 4 and the bolster 5. The bolster is of the usual general form and is provided on its sides near its end with a vertical offset lug or shoulder 6 adapted to bear against the inner side of the side frame so that endwise movement of the bolster outwardly through the side frame will be prevented. Spaced inwardly from the stops 6 are other stop lugs or shoulders 7 on the sides of the bolster. The spring plank is substantially U-shaped in cross section to fit snugly in the lower portion of the opening 3, and openings or sockets 8 may be provided through the base of the plank to receive lugs 9 on the side frame and thereby lock the plank and side frame together. The brake hanger brackets 10 are cast integral with the spring plank and are so located that when the parts are assembled to form the truck, the stop lugs or shoulders 7 will bear against the sides of the brackets, as shown in Figure 1, thereby preventing lateral separation of the bolster and s rin plank.
With the escribed construction, when the parts remainlng intact. When the parts are assembled, the lugs 6 and 7 cause the lateral forces working through the bolster to be transmitted to the side frame simultaneously at upper and lower levels so that the forces are distributed and the tendency of the side frame to rock is overcome to a degree not possible when the force is applied above the journal bearings as in the usual type of truck.
Instead of locking the spring plank to the side frame by the lugs 9 and sockets 8, the arrangement shown in Figure 5 may be employed. In this form. lugsll are formed on the sides of the opening through the side frame and are arranged in pairs spaced apart both vertically and horizontally. Vertically spaced lugs 12 are formed on the side flanges of the spring plank and so disposed that when the spring plank is slid into position in the side frame. the lugs 12 will ride over the respective lugs 11 and then .drop into place between the horizontally alined lugs to positively lock the plank to the side frame.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is f- 1. In a car truck, a side frame having an opening therethrough. spaced lugs on the sides of the opening through the side frame arranged in vertical and horizontal alinement, a spring plank having its end 'inserted in the opening in the side frame, and vertically spaced and aligned lugs on the spring plank to pass between the vertically alined lugs on the side frame and engage between the horizontally alined lugs.
2. In a car truck, a side frame having an opening therethrough. spaced lugs on the sides of the opening through the side frame arranged in vertical and horizontal alinement, a spring plank having its end inserted in the opening in the side frame, vertically spaced and alined lugs on the spring plank to pass between the vertically alined lugs on the side frame and engage between the horizontally alined lugs, and brake hanger brackets carried by the spring plank.
