GUARD MEcHANIsii/r.
Application filed October 3,'1922. Serial No. 592,160.
rlhis invention relates to mechanism for guarding or protecting openings in buildings, .or places of possible entry, such as windows, `doors and 'passagewaya by unauthorized persons.
s One object of the invention is toprovide a guard mechanism of relatively simple construction.
Another object of the-invention is toprovide a guarding yor protecting mechanism having relatively movable yelements which arey capable of. beingpositi-oned to protect or guard `an opening, or nested relativel to eachother to permit unobstructed use o the opening. f n
Another object of the'invention is to provide in kmechanismV ofk this character improv-ed means for supporting and moving kthe protecting or guarding elements, whereby they. may be readily moved from their operative position to their inoperative posi tion, and vice versa.y s
Other objects of th-e invention will be apparent 'to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates from the following description taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is ank elevation of a window frame and window and a guard mechanism emi? bodying my invention associated therewith.k is a section on the line 2-20fl Fig. 2 Fig. 1.
F ig. 3 is an lelevation showing the guard mechanism in operated position-that is,
' moved into position to guard-the window andprevent entry therethrough, parts being broken away to facilitate the illustration.
Fig. 4 is a s-ection on the line 4--4 of Fig. 3. f
Fig. 5 isa section onthe line 5 5 of VFig. 3.
Figs. 6 and 7 are fragmentary side' eleva tional views'illustrating details of construc tion.
Inthe drawings, 1 indicates a frame forming` an opening 2 which is to be protected or guarded. The frame 1 constitutes the frame for a window, this being shown as the preferred application of my` invention. It will however be understood that the guard mechanism, later to be described, is primari-` yly lto be yintended to protect or guard an opening to prevent .the entryV therethrough of unauthorized persons, it being immaterial so far as the: present inventionk 1s concerned and in carrying out its purpose whether the `with it a 'closingidevice such as 'a door or a window sash or sashes. The frame 1 is preferably providedv with guiding devices 3, e, 4', forming guid-es in different vertical planes to accommodate sliding window sashes 5,6. f "l 7 indicates an auxiliary frame arranged to, be permanently fixed within the frame 1 in any suitable mannenpref-erably on the outer. side of the sashes 5, 6. The auxiliary frame 7 may be incorporated with the frame 1 when assembledor appliedthereto after it is complet-ed and utilized in a building structure A. The auxiliary frame 7 serves to cover certain'elements of the guard mechanism, indicated as an entirety at 8, in such manner that the latter cannot be tampered with at any time. Where the auxiliary frame y7 is applied to the frame 1 subsequent to its kcompletion or assembly in abuilding structure,it is preferably constructed to support the supporting devices and guarding elements so that the latter and the auxiliary frame maybek assembled as substantially a unitary structure.
The auxiliary frame 7 lpreferably com- .prises a pair. of angle plates 7 and upper and lower cross members 9, 10, respectively,
lconstituting the 4opening 2 toform chambers 9', 10'-, respectively, the purpose of which will be later set forth..
Referring to the guard mechanism 8, 11, 12, indicate a pair of devices extending along the opposite sides of the Vopening 2k and adapted to support a plurality of guard elements 13; By preference, the supporting f devices 11, 12, 'extend along the vertical sides of the opening V2 and the guard elements 13 engage with the devices'11,'12, at their oppositev ends and' move vertically thereon. 'lhesesupporting devices 1 1, 12 are preferably arranged relatively close to the inner `faces of the vside walls 7 b, this arrangement serving to position the guard elements 13 close Y,to these walls as well as the'cross members 9, 10, thereby preventing the insertion of tools betweeny the guard elements and the auxiliar frame 7. For this nur. ose ,the
