WALTER E. ZANDER, 0F PHILADELPHIA,
, OFFICE.
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'ro sonnnrrnn dz ZANDER, INC., 01 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- sravanra.
LADYSY HOSIERY.
Application filed March 16, 1925. Serial No. 15,750.
This invention, generally stated, relates to full fashioned hosiery and has more especialrelation to so-called silk chiffon hosiery.
Silk chiffon hosiery, which is very populad at the present time, is of such fine texture throughout that the instep and foot portions are entirely too delicate to withstand even moderately hard usage. The result that the leg portion is frequently in good order but'the instep and foot port-ion condition renders the stocking useless for further wear. If the foot portion was reinforced according to well known methods of reinforce an unsightly line would appear at the juncture of the leg and instep portions of the stocking, which, since low shoes are almost exclusively now worn by women, is highly undesirable. I
The leading object of the present invention is to overcome the above objectionable features and provide a silk chiffon stocking structure in which while all the delicate texture of the leg portion is preserved the foot and instep portions are efficiently reinforced in such manner that theregular web threads and the reinforcing threads form a fabric with parts blending one into the other in an artistic manner commensurate with the high grade of hosiery under discussion. Other and further objects not at this time appearing will be referred to hereinafter.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1, is a view in side elevation of a stocking embodying the invention.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary view in vation thereof; and
Fig. 3, is a similar view in rear elevation thereof.
For the purpose of illustrating my inven tion I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and front ele- -reliable results, although it is to be under stood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to' the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Hosiery embodying features of the present invention is knit upon a straight knitting machine equipped with apparatus as shown, described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent numbered 1,198,482, dated September 19, 1916. In manufacture, the stocking web 10, which has salvage edges, is knit in a well understood manner until after the narrowing operation has been completed as indicated at 11. The web as fabricated is of very fine grade of silk chiffon, a ver popular material. as at present employe At or shortly after the narrowing operation, as fancy indicates, carriers supplied with reinforcing thread are thrown into action for knitting into the web, simultaneously with web formation, a plurality of reinforcedinstep and ankle portions. Each carrier functions to knit reinforcing thread into the web in successive courses to cause the inner ends of the courses to define symmetrical, zig-zag-like lines 12 to provide a reinforcing portion 13 of which there-may be any desired number. For illustrative purposes I have shown four of such portions in the drawings. It is desirable, however, to have these reinforced portions at the instep and ankle parts of a stocking. The reinforced parts gradually increase in width as they approach the stocking foot. The stocking foot, heel, and toe parts are reinforced throughout and the reinforced instep and ankle parts merge with the heel and foot reinforcement so that when low shoes or slippers are worn there is provided above :the shoe line a plurality of spaced reinforced parts which radually taper upwardlyand are annular y disposed. Thus silk chiffon stockings may be manufactured. to provide maximum wearing qualities at the toe, foot, and heel portions including instep and ankle portions without exposing a marked degree of reinforcement above the shoe line. Since the reinforced parts may be arranged in difierent designs many pleasis to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification 'invarious particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of theiinvention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is: I
1. A stocking having a leg portion of silk chifi'on combined with a foot portion having a substantially continuous'reinforcement at the instep extending well above the emma upper edge of the usual low shoe, and merging into a plurality of ornamental upward projections. p
2. A stocking having a leg portion of silk chifion combined. with a foot-portion reinforced over substantially the entire instep and ankle with ornamental reinforced stripes projecting upward into the leg portion.
chifi'o'n combined with a foot portion reinforced over substantially the entire instep and ankle by ornamental reinforced areas projecting into the leg portion, two of said areas extending upward from the heel at opposit-e sides of the leg, and the combined width'of said areas at the base being approximately equal to the width of the heel.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
WALTER E; ZANDER.
3. A stocking having a leg portion of sill;-
