Description
s. BIKE,
` Cotton-Press. NO. |64,980. a Patente.d.june29,`l8-5.
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOT0,LITH.39&4I PARK PLACELNY.
UNITED STATESv PATENT OEEICE. N
SOLON DIKE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,980, dated June 29, 1875 application filed December 24, 1874.
To all whom it may'conccrn Be it known that I, SOLON BIKE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Cotton-Presses; and do hereby declare that thetollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the cotton-press for which Letters Patent No. 30,394 were granted to ine October 16, 1860; and it consists in combning with the trucks, togglelevers, follower, and vertical guide-rod therein employed, a drum placed loosely on the guide-rod, supported upon balls, and connected by cords with the trucks, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved eottonpress, and Fig. 2 is a section through the drum surrounding the vvertical guide-rod.
A represents the frame of my press. `B is the follower; G C, the trucks moving between the bars I) D, E E, the toggle-levers; and H, the vertical guider-od, all constructed and arranged substantially in the same manner as described in my former patent above referred to. O11 the bottom bars D, surrounding the vertical guide-rod H, is secured a plate or cup, b, in which are placed a series of balls, a a, and upon these balls rests a drum, Gr, which is placed loosely around the vertical guide-rod H. Similar'balls may be introduced between the upper surface of the drum and the upper bars D, if desired. The drum G is, by cords d d, connected with the trucks O O, and in the side of the drum is a recess, t', for the insertion of the end of a lever, I, by means of which the drum is turned to draw the trucks inward. These parts may be so arranged that a simple oneihalf revolution of the drinn will move the follower sufficiently to press a bale.
The invention is simple, easily applied to presses of this class, and, when thus applied, the press is easily and effectively operated.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- In combination with the trucks O C, togglelevers E E, follower B, and vertical guide-rod H, the drum G having recess t', the balls a a, cords d d, and lever I, all'substantially as and for the purposes-herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
SOLON DIKE. Witnesses:
G. M. ALEXANDER, J. M. MAsoN.
