Description
W. A. WRIGHT. Baling-Press.
I Patented July 1, I879.
@itmsscs:
NPEYER PNOTOLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D 0.
ATTOKNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF OENTRETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC- R. KULP, O F HATFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALlNG-PRESSES.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,037, dated July 1, 1879; application filed April 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, of Oentreton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly sectional, of a portion of a press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the combination, with the follower of a press and the operating-lever thereof, of a rack or rack-bar having on one side a flanged roller, and on the other side an engaging pinion, whereby the follower may be easily and powerfully operated, and the rack is prevented from vertical and lateral displacements, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the box of the press; B, a lever which is pivoted to the follower A, (shown in dotted lines and O, levers which are pivoted to the base of the press and to the lever B. D represents a horizontally arranged rack, which is pivoted by short levers or straps a, to the lever B, and engages with a pinion, E, mounted on the base of the press. F represents gearing, receiving power from any suitable means, and communicating the same to the pinion E.
Itwill be seen that when the pinion E is operated in one direction the leverB is raised, thus elevating the follower, and when it is operated in the other direction said lever and follower are lowered. By this provision the follower may be easily, quickly, and powerfully operated for pressing purposes.
In order to guide the rack and prevent vertical and lateral displacement, I employ a roller, Gr, having flanged sides I), the periphery of the roller resting against the upper face of the rack, and the flanges overlapping the sides of the rack. By these means the rack moves uniformly and with but little friction, and its tendency to rise or shift lat erally is prevented. 9
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the follower A and levers B O, of the horizontally-arranged rack D, and the pinion E and flanged roller G on opposite sides of said rack, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WM. A. WRIGHT.
