Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrron WILLIAM W. BROWER, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN JAR-LIFTERS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 164,968, dated June 29, 1875; application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILL AM W. BROWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ar-Lifters, of which thefollowing is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a front view of the tongs. Fig. 2 is asection of Fig. 1, looking from the line 00 as, showing the cushioned jaws. Fig. 3 is a face View of one of the cushions, showing the air-cells.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspouding parts.
A represents the tongs, which are made adjustable, so as to suitjars or cans of different size by means of the holes and screw, seen at B. The tongs are spread in each direction from the screw, the lower portion or legs of the tongs B being made double, and attached to the metallic jaws G (J at the points D, seen in Fig. 3. These jaws are plain curved fiat bars 0t metal, riveted to the end of the legs B. E E are plates of india-rnbber, (or equivalent materiah) preferably a little longer than the jaws, which are fastened to the jaws by rivets F. G represents air-cells in these plates. These cells may be made of any shape or size. In this example of my invention I show a deep groove, H, around the edges of the plates, with cavities or cells inside the grooves. The rivets F pass from the bottom of these cells, as represented. These rubber plates are soft and pliable, and when the jaws are slightly compressed upon the sides of the jar or can, the atmospheric air is excluded from the grooves and cells, which prevents the can or jar from slipping from the tongs when the pressure is very slight, as the can or jar will be held by the pressure of the atmosphere, and all danger of crushing the jar or can (although made of the most fragile material) is obviated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a jar-lifter consisting of two rods made adjustable at the point of intersection, B, and bifurcated below, forming the legs B B, which carry rubberfaced arc-jaws 0 0, made fast to the inside of their lower ends, as shown and described.
WILLIAM W. BROWER.
