BAKERS FEEL.A
SPECIFICATION forming part o f Letters Patent No. 754,042, dated. March 8, 1904. Application iled September 26, 1903, Serial N o. 174,829. (No model.)v
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTERIED J. BoHN, aV citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bakers Peels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in akers peels and other devices of similar character, which by reason of the material of which they are made are liableto shrink when subjected to a high degree of heat and also to split and Warp.
The object of my invention is to provide a bakers peel that will be light, strong, durable, and cheap of construction, and particularly one in which the shrinkage of the boards comprising the blade may be taken up and the liability of warping and cracking almost entirely obviated. I accomplish these ends by means of the construction described in the following specication, and shown in the accompanyng drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail sectional longitudinal view of one of the side clamping-strips and tightening means for the same.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the blade of my improved bakers peel, which to cheapen the cost of constructionI have shown as formed of a series of longitudinally-tapered boards a, the same being glued or otherwise suitably secured together and provided with fiat upper and lower surfaces, as shown. Two
elongated slots I) are formed through the central portion of the thickened end of the blade A to receive the Shanks c of the handle-bracket B, the upper portion of said bracket being forked and of any suitable design to receive one end of the handle O, which is retained therein by means of screws or bolts c'. The
bracket B is laterally strengthened and braced by suitable webs, which are provided with lugs, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, to engage holes provided in the adjacent portion of the blade A.
The clamping-strips D, which are preferably cast from metal, are provided with a series of apertures to receive the internallythreaded screws Z or other suitable adjusting means and adapted to be connected to each other and held in binding engagement with the sides of the blade A by means of the rods e, which pass through transversely-disposed apertures providedthrough said blade and have their ends threaded to engage with the v screws d. I have shown the strips D as formed with a series of lugsf on their inner surfaces to engage with apertures or sockets provided in the sides of the blade A to prevent warping of the blade and aid in retaining said strips thereon when the screws l are loosened. In order to prevent the Shanks o of the bracket B frombeing withdrawn from the slots when in use, I provide said shanks with one or more apertures which aline with the corresponding apertures in the blade A and are adapted to receive one or more of the rods e.
One of the advantages of my invention is that the blade thereof may be built up of several narrow strips of board, whereas in the bakers peels now commonly in use the blade is required to be in a single piece. This of itself constitutes a great saving in cost of construction.
It will be apparent from the above description that by my construction the blade A is considerably strengthened and its tendency to warp prevented, and that any shrinkage occurring in the board or boards forming the blade of my device may be readily compen-l sated for by tightening the screws d on the ends of the rods e, thus causing the blade to be compressed between the strips D and the cracks or openings occasioned by such shrinkage to be closed.
It is obvious that such changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction of the parts as fairly fall within the scope of my invention may be made Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bakers peel, consisting of a tapered blade, a handle, one or more rods extending transversely of said blade, and adjusting means in engagement with said rods and adapted to cause a lateral compression of said blade.
2. A bakers peel', consisting of a tapered blade, a handle, strips engaging the sides of said blade, and adjustable rods connecting said strips, substantially as described.
3. A bakers peel, consisting of a blade having a series of transversely-disposed apertures therethrough, a handle, rods in said apertures, and means connected to said rods for causing lateral adjustment oi' said blade, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described, consisting of a tapered blade having transverselydisposed apertures therethrough, a handlebracket having its Shanks securedA within slots provided in said blade, rods in said apertures, a member having a series of inwardly-projecting lugs thereon in engagement with each side of said blade, and means in engagement With said rods adapted to compress said members, substantially as described.
5.' A bakers peel, comprising a tapered blade having transverse apertures therethrough, a handle, rods in said apertures, compressing-strips at the sides of said blade, and internally-threaded screws countersunk Within said strips and in engagement with the ends of said rods and said strips, substantially as described.
6. A bakers peel or like article, comprising a blade, having slots in its upper end, a handle-bracket having its retaining-Shanks in said slots, a handle in said bracket, a series of rods disposed transversely of said blade and engaging the Shanks of said bracket, and means attached to said rods for laterally compressing said blade, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereofl Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
