CONTAINER.
Application filed March 24,1926. Serial No. 96,991.
This invention relates to containers or cartons adapted, to hold articles of merchandise for shipment, ldisplay or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved form oi' device of the type set forth having a simple and rugged construction which will be cheap and easy to manufacture.
This and other objects which will be apparent to those skilled in this particular art are accomplished by means of this invention, one embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which F igure 1 is a perspective view of a container i5 constructed in accordance with one torni o'f this invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing the container open and Figs.
4 and 5 are transverse sectional views through the central part of the container.
'lhe particular embodiment of this invention which has been' chosen for the purposes of illustration is adapted to contain such merchandise as ginger ale bottles or the like, but it will be apparent that the invention is adaptable to all forms of Containers.
rllhe illustrated embodiment consists of a container including back and end walls of the usual form. The front wall is cut away or the container is so formed that the front wall does not extend entirely across the front of the container so that when the con# tainer is open the contents thereof are visible through the open portion of the yfront wall. A lid is hinged to the back wall 'and an extension or closure is formed on the lid 'for covering the open portion of the Jfront wall when the lid is closed. A separate device such as a partition is adapted to be inserted along the front ot the container and ao this partition is provided with a ilap which falls outwardly and downwardly upon openingof the container so as to expose the contents through the open portion. The face of the ap which is thus exposed to View bears i5 a legend such as directions for the use of the merchandise, trademarks, advertising matter or the like. v
As illustrated, the container 5- has a back wall 6 and end walls 7. The front portions of each end wall are bent inwardly to form wings 8 of such construction and arrangement as to constitute the side portions ot' a front wall, the center part of which is open or cut away to provide an opening 9. rli`he wings 8 of the side walls are held in position and the various parts ot the entire box are held in assembled relation by an upwardly extending lap 1() formed on the bottom 11 ot' the container which embraces the lower portions ot the wings 8 and extends across 60 the bottom of the open space 9 therebetween. Any desired means, such as securing strips 12 of paper or other material, may be employed 'l'or holding the parts in their assembled relation.
A separable partition 13 has a lower supporting portion 1li adapted to be inserted within the `llap 1() enclosing the bottom front ot' the container, and a flap 15 is hinged to the supporting portion for closing the opening 9 when in upright position. When the container is open the tlap is adapted to fall downwardly and outwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and the exposed tace of the flap when in uns position is provided with any desired form ot' legend such as directions for the use of the merchandise, advertising matter or the like. l y The container is closedand the legend bearing flap 15 is held in upright position, 9o see Fig. 2, by an extension or closure flap 16 formed on an adjacent portion of the container such as, for example, the front edge or' the hinged cover 17. "With the construction illustrated it will be apparent that when the lid is closed, after positioning the legend bearing flap in its upright position across tlielopening 9, the extension 16 will cover the open portion 9 and cooperate with the Hap 10 forming the base of the front 90 wall to close thev container, and the container canbe sealed by a sealing strip 18 extending along the joint formed by the meeting edges of the extension 16 and the wall base 10. A
"seal breaking string 19 can be positioned aeg along the jointbeneath the sealing strip and its end securely held by a paper seal 2() which may bear a trademark or any other desired configuration.
Upon openingthe container the seal is broken by pulling the string 19. rlhe closure flap 16 can then be opened whereupon the legend bearing flap 15 talls outwardly to the position shown .in Fig. 3 so as to expose the contents of the container and at the v same time render directions or other read-v ing matter visible.
1t will be apparent that the use of the terms side walls, front walls, top, bottom,
etc. in the present description is applied to the illustrated embodiment of the present invention. Obviously, these terms are not used in a limiting sense but are intended to be merely descriptive of the illustrated embodiment.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination in a container for articles ot merchandise, of an opening formed in one wall, an extension formed on the top of the container for covering said opening when the container is closed, a removable partition adapted to extend across said opening beneath said extension and provided with a legend bearing flap hinged thereto so as to fall into such 'a position upon opening the container as to expose the interior of the container and render the legend bearing` face of the ap visible.
2. The combination in a container for articles of merchandise of a back Wall having a lid hinged thereto, side walls, a. bottom provided with an upwardly extending flap forming the lower portion of a front wall, an extension formed on said lid and adapted to cooperate with said flap for closing the front wall and a partition adapted to be inserted Within said .lap provided with a legend bearing section adapted to fall into legend displaying position upon opening said container.
3. The combination in a container having side and back walls, of a front wall having a portion thereof cut away, a partition placed Within said front wall and extending across the opening therein, a lid having an extension for covering said o ening when said lid is closed and a fiap hinged to said partition for swinging outwardly upon opening of said lid.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 18th day of March.
LOUIS C. BITZER.
