EWALD VANID'ERSTEIN, OF JJULKEN,
runivaon steer Application filed January 21, 1925, Serial No. 3,724,
This invention has reference to furnaces, particularly cupola furnaces provided with blast heating means, i. e., recuperators or regenerators and it is one of the important objects or 1 1 to so arrangetlic aid blast heating means and the communicating passages connected therewith, as to shorten the paths of the gases and of the blast, and so that the blast chambers and passages may be arranged about a pair of furnaces so as to constitute therewith a compact working unit. I
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, showing by way of example some sun bodiments of the principles of this invention, Figure 1 being a front elevationwitn parts in section on the line 1-1 Figure and Figure 2 is a corresponding side view. F'gure ii is a corresponding plan view partly in horizontal section. In Figures 1 and 5 a modified arrangement is shown in front elevation ith parts in section and respectively in plan view.
1n the form of the invention according to Figures 1 to 3 a double blast heater 1, 2 comprising a pair of regenerators is disposed at the rear of the furnaces 3 and 4, and these regenerators communicate respectively with blast preheating chambers 1, 2 which are heated therefrom and are directly connected by short conduits 5, 6, 7, 8 to the retorts or torch chambers or flues 9, 10, 11, 12 of the furnaces. A and A, respectively, are the air inlet and waste gas era haust pipes communicating with the regenerators 1, 2, and B is the usual reversing valve adjustable for reversing the flow of the air and gases. In the position of the valve B shown in Figure 3, fresh air enters through the pipe A into the regenerator 2, and flows through the chambers 1, 2 at the opposite sides thereof and the con duits 5, 8 into the retorts 9, 12 of furnaces 3, 1, across the furnace chambers. into the retorts 10, 11, and through conduits 6, 7 to the regenerator 1, from which the waste gases discharge through the pipe A. lVhen the damper B is reversed, the fresh air entering through pipe A enters regenerator 1, and flows through the conduits 6, 7, and re torts 10, 11, and acrossthe furnaces 3, f in the reverse direction from that above-described, and then back through retorts 9, 12, conduits 5, 8 and chambers 1, 2 to the secnd regenerator 2, and then out through the area.

gases and air.
in tie modified arrangement according to Figures i and of the drawing there is the difference that the double blast heater comprising the regenerator 13, 14 is arranged I it \3 intermediate of the furnaces 15, 16, the con ductors 11, iii, 19, 30 leading to and from the retorts or torch chambers or lines 21, 22, E33, of the furnaces being connected with blast reheating chambers 13, 13",1 1, 1 1* communicating with and heated from the regenerators. As a result of the described arrangement of the blast preheating chainbers 13 13', 14, 1 t the particles of dust carried over by the waste gases are almost completely deposited in these preliminary chambers, so that the waste gases will enter the blast heaters 13, 13', 1&1 led in a purified condition. lln this form of the invention the corresponding retort chambers of the furaces 21, 22, 23,2 are connected to each other by a by-pass conduit and respectively 26 in such a manner that a portion of the fresh blast is conducted to the delivery side of the furnace where it will cause the substantially complete combustion of the carbon monoxid carried by the exhaust gases. This admission of the fresh blast may also be ell'ected directly from the blast conduit. -Whenever required, the plurality of blast heating chambers which constitute a unit, may be arranged around one of the furnaces. 1 V ith the arrangement of the valve B shown in Figure 5, air enters through pipe A to regenerator 18, and through chambers 13, 13 and conduits 17, 18, to retorts 21, 22, and. across the furnaces 15, 16, in one direction, thence into retorts 23, 2d, and through conduits 19, 20, chambers 1d and 14. to regenerator 14, and thence through exhaust pipe A. Upon reversal of the valve B, the direction of flow of the air and gases will be reversed in an obvious manner.
The invention has been shown and described in its broad aspects only, and it will be understood that it may be varied to meet the various requirements of use, and without (iii deviating from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. The combination of a pair of blast furnaces, retort chambers at opposite sides of each furnace, a pair of regenerators arranged side by side, preheaters arranged at opposite sides of the regenerators, each preheater being in direct connnunieation with a regenrator and the retort chambers of one of the. furnaces, a valve casing. pipes connecting said 'asing at two of its sides with the regenerators, air supply and. waste exhaust pipes comnmnicating with the casing at di ametrically opposite sides thereof and at right angles to the pipes first-named, and a reversing valve in said casing for connecting theair pipe with one of the first-named pipes and the waste gas exhaust pipe with theother first-named pipe, or vice versa.
2. The combination of a pair of blast turnaces arranged in transverse alinement, retort chambers at opposite sides ol each turnace, a pair of regenerators arranged side by side and in rear of the furnaces. preheaters at the opposite sides of the regenerators, each preheater being in direct communication with a regenerator and the retort chambers of one of the furnaces. a valve casing disposed above the regenerators, pipes conneeting said casing at two of its sides with the regenerators, air supply and waste gas exhaust pipes communicating with the easing at diametrically opposite sides thereof and at right angles to the pipes first-named, I-
and a reversing valve in said casing, for connecting' the air suppl pipe with one of the first -named pipes and the waste gas exhaust pipe with the other first-named pipe. or vice versa.
The combination of a pair of blast furnaces arranged in transverse alincment, retort chambers atopposite sides of each l'urnace, a pair of regenerators arranged side by side. preheaters at opposite sides of the regenerators, each preheater being in direct communication with a regenerator and the retort chambers of one of the furnaces a valve easing disposed above the regenerators, pipes connecting said casing at two of its sides with the regcnerators, air supply and waste gas exhaust pipes communicating with the casino at diametrically opposite sides thereof and at right angles to the pipes first-named. and a reversing valve in said casing for connecting the air pipe with one oi the first-named pipes and the waste gas exhaust pipe with the other first-named pipe, or vice versa.
