IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.

Spccification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,888, dated June 22, 1875 application filed May 3, 1875.

To all whom i t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES ALEXANDER WEED, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Door-Bell and Burglar-Alarm andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will onable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a door having my invention applied to it, the bell being removed to more clearly show the striking mechanism, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of a part of the same.

A is the spindle of the latch, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction. A is a two-armed lever, attached to and operated by the spindles. a a are chains extending from each end of lever A to a hook, a. B is a chain connecting hook a with a Wire, B, which in turn is attached to the trippinglever (J of the striking mechanism. As any of the many well-known constructions of devices for actuating the hammer D may be employed, it is not necessary to enter into a detailed description of this part, any further than to state that in the one which I have adopted the chain L2 runs over pulley c. and is connected, through an opening represented at c, with a bell-pull,

- the shank of which is arranged'at a right angle to chain B. The bell is represented at E. F

is a pulley, supported on a line substantially coincident with the pivots of the hinges G, upon which the door is hung. When the knob A is turned in either direction to unlatch the door, the movement of lever will draw the chains and strike the bell, as will be readily seen without further description. (I is a guide through which the chain c and the chain or link B pass, the object of this guide being to insure that when lever c is operatedl by either the chain or the link the idle one shall not be displaced from its proper position.

By an examination of Fig. 2, it will be seen that in case from the shrinkage of the door, or from any other reason, the latch can be withdrawn without necessitating moving lever A far enough to ring an alarm, the act of opening the door will, under the arrangement of parts there shown, produce a movement of the chain which will strike the bell. Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, with the chain c and chain or link B, of the guide d, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the tripping-lever l, of the chains (1 B a a, link B, spindle A, lever A, and the detachable fastening a, whereby the bell E may be used as a doorbell only, or as a door-bell and burglar-alarm, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the lever A the striking mechanism,and the connectin g-chains, of the pulley F, by which the opening of the door serves to operate the alarm, substantially as set forth.
