UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
ALFRED KREIDLER, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY..
WIRE-DRAWING MACHINE.
Application led March 2, 1927, Serial N o. 172,080, and in Germany November 17, 1925.
The invention relates to a wire drawing machine,of the character in which the wire passing from a drawing die is wound onto a drawing drum.
An object of the invention is to provide a machinewherein two drawing drums may be associated with a single drawing die so that one drawing drum may be properly positioned relative to the die and used for windf 1o ing the wire and drawing thesame through the die, while the other drum is freed from the actuating shaft therefor so that the wire may be unwound from said drum without in any way interfering with the action of the drum which isv drawing the wire through the die.
In the drawings, the figure is a -sectional View through a portion of a machine embodying the invention.
The invention is directed to a machine for drawing wire and includes two drawing drums associated with a single drawing die. These two drums are both mounted on the same actuating shaft and are free to be moved endwise of the shaft for a limited distance. Associated with the drawin drums is a drawing die which has a fixe position in the machine. The drums are normally free from connection to the actuating shaft and are brought into driving cngagement with the shaft by an endwise movement of the drums along the shaft. When the drums are moved in one direction one of the drums will be brought into proper position to draw the wire through the drawingl die and wind the same onto the drum. At this time the drawing drum is engaged with the shaft -so` that it is actuated thereby. While this drum is active to draw the wire iO-theother drum is free from the actuating shaft and may turn so that the wire may be unwound therefrom for any purpose. After the active drum has been fully wound' then the drums are moved endwise on the actuat- 45 ing shaft again so as to disconnect th drum which is full and connect the other drum which is empty to the actuating shaft. This shifting of the drums brings the empty drum into proper position to receive the wire from the drawing die.
Referring more in detail to the drawings there is shown more or less diagrammatically a portion of a Wire drawing machine which includes an actuating shaft a driven by a beveled gear b which in turn is operated by a at z and the wire at la.
beveled gear o. On this actuating shaft are two drums d and e. These drums may be of any desired construction. They are prefer` ably conical in shape. The drums are freely mounted on the shaft a so that they can be moved endwise thereof. This can be accomplished by any suitable shifting means. The drums are preferably spaced by ball bearings and g, and are moved as a unit along the shaft. The drum Z is .provided with notches Z in the hub of the drum. A key h attached to the actuating shaft a is adapted to seat in said notch when the drum d is moved along the shaft in a direction toward the beveled gear b. The drawing die is indicated Vhen the drum d is moved so as 'to connect the same to the actuating shaft it will then be positioned so as to receive the wire from the drawing die At this time the drum e is free from engagement with the shaft. After the drum d has been fully wound then the drums are moved along the shaft a withdrawing the key from the notch Z and causing vthe key z. to engage the notch m in the hub of the drum e. This shifting of the drum e to bring it into engagement with the key 7n on the actuating'shaft a brings it into line with the drawing die z'. The shifting of the drum d to disengage it from the key moves it out of line with the drawing die i and this enables the drum e to be turned and the wire unwound therefrom without in any way in terfering with the winding of the wire drawn through the die i onto the drum e.
From the above it will be apparent that the improved wire drawing machine includes two drums associated with a single drawing die and a supporting and actuating mechanism which permits the drums to be shifted so that they are not only alternately connected and disconnected to the actuating shaft but also alternately moved relative to the drawing die so as to be properly positioned for actively winding the wire or permitting the wire to be unwound from the idle drum without interfering with the drawing operation which is going on.
-What I cla-im as my invention is:
A wire drawing machine including in combination a wire drawing die in set position, a supporting and actuating shaft, wire drawin drums mounted on the shaft whereby sald drums may be shifted as a unit longitudinally of the shaft, means whereby when 110 said drums are shifted one of said drums is draw Wire therethrough, while the idle drum connected to said shaft to be rotated thereis placed so as to permit free unwinding of with and the other drum is simultaneously the Wire thereon Without interfering with 10 disconnected from said shaft so as to rotate the drawing operation of the active drum.
5 idly thereon, said connecting means being In testimony whereof I have signed my positioned relative to the drawing die so that name to this specification.
the active drum is placed relative to the die to ALFRED KREIDLER.
