APPARATUS FOR TREATING METAL STRIPS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUsr SUNDI-I, a citizen of the United Staoes, and a resident of Hastingsupon-Hudson, county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Treating Metal Strips of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a method'and apparatus for treating metal strips and particularly to the treating of metal strips preparatory to the pickling operation.
As is well known in the art of manufacturing sheet metal, the metal, as it comes from the rolling mill, is wound up into coils and thereafter placed into ovens to be annealed. After the annealing operation the metal coil is immersed in a vat of acid or other suitable material for the pickling operation, the purpose of the pickling operation being to loosen and remove the scale and dirt with which the metal is coated. As the metal comes from the rolling mill it is wound in a tight coil by power-operated means so that when the coil is placed in the pickling vat the acid or other pickling medium is unable to penetrate between the wraps of the metal coil with the result that the metal will be only imperfectly cleaned. In some instances it is customary to loosen the wraps of the coils by hand before the pickling operation which consumes a great deal of time and the results obtained even then are more or less unsatisfactory.
The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for treating a strip of metal whereby, although the metal is wound in a coil by power-operated means, the wraps of the coil will be slightly spaced or separated so that when the coil is immersed in the pickling bath, the latter will have access to all parts of the metal and thoroughly clean the same throughout its length.
Briefly, 1 have provided an extremely simple apparatus comprising two coil-receiving members, one of which is power driven and the other of which is adapted to receive the coil of metal as the same comes from the annealing oven. rewind or coil it, a removable separator or spacer being interposed between the wraps of the coil during the rewinding operation. After the metal coil is completely rewound the separator is readily removed and the metal remains in a coiled-up condition with the wraps of the coil slightly spaced or separated from each other so that when the coil 13 deposited in the pickling bath the latter has access to the metal throughout its length to thoroughly clean the same. As mentioned above, the apparatus involved is e:
tremely simple to construct and operate and the time consumed in the rewinding operatlon is very short, compared with the old hand method, and much more effective in that the coils of metal in the practice of the present method are positively separated.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a base carrying a hollow column 2 secured thereto in any suitable manner, the column receiving a vertically extending shaft 3 mounted on roller bearings 4c and 5. At the upper end of the shaft 3 and rigidly secured thereto is a metal coil -.receiving member 6 adapted to rotate within a memher 7 secured to the upper end of the column 2, the member 7 having vertically extending flanges 8 and 9, the tops of which are flush with the upper surface of the member 6. The upper end of the shaft 3 extends a short distance above the upper face of the coilreceiving member and is provided with a slot or other suitable means adapted to receive the inner end 10 of a metaleoil when the same is transferred from the annealing oven to the coil-receiving member.
To one side of the apparatus just described, I have provided a base 11 carrying a vertically extending column 12 within which is mounted a shaft 13, this shaft being ting the flange 9 of the member 7, already referred to, when the apparatus is assembled. Carried by the shaft 13 is a stub shaft 20 mounted on roller bearings 21. Mounted on this stub shaft and keyed thereto is a gear 22 within the casing formed by the flange 16 of the column 12 and the member v 17, already referred to. Immediately above the gear 22 and rigidly secured to the stub shaft is a metal coil-receiving member 23, the upper face of which is flush with the top of the flange 18, the upper face of the member 7 and the upper face of the coilreceiving member 6. The upper end of the stub shaft 20 extends a short distance above the face of the coil-receiving member 23 in order that means may be provided about which the metal being unwound from the coil-receiving member 6 may be rewound upon the member 23. 1
At the lower end of the shaft 13 is mounted a clutch member or disk 24. Also carried adjacent the lower end of the shaft 13 is a gear 25 meshing with a gear 26, the latter being mounted on a vertically extending shaft 27 extending through the flange 16 of the column 12 and carrying on its upper end a gear 28, this gear meshing with the gear 22 already referred to. The gears 25 and26 and the clutch member. 24 are all inclosed within'the casing formed by the base 11 and the base of the column 12.
At the side of the casing 11 and secured thereto in any suitable manner I provide means for receiving a removable separator, this means comprising a casting 29 carrying a shaft 30 on one end of which is mounted a driving pulley 31 and on the other end of which is mounted a spool 32 for receiving a removable separator 33 which may be a rope, cord, or other suitable material.
' At the side of the casing, as viewed in Fig.
1, I provide an electric motor 34, this motor carrying a gear 35 on its armature shaft, which gear meshes with a gear 36 carried on a shaft 37 extending through the base 11, which shaft carries at its end opposite to the gear 36 a friction pulley 38 adapted to be placed in driving connection with the driving pulley 31 for the separator through the medium of a friction pulley 39 carried by a link 40 secured to one arm of a bell crank Mounted on the shaft 37 intermediate the gear 36 and pulley 38 is a sleeve 44, this sleeve carrying at the left-hand end thereof, as viewed in Fig. 1, a pulley :.andfat the other end or at least operatively connected to the other end, a pulley 46. The sleeve 44 is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the shaft 37 by means of levers 47 and 48, the lever 47 being secured to the sleeve44 in any suitable manner and being pivoted to the lever 48, the latter being pivoted at 49 and having an extension 50 to the exterior of the casing 11 whereby the same may be foot-operated to cause the sleeve 44 to be moved longitudinally of the shaft 37, either to the right or left, as the case. may be, to bring the pulley 45 or the pulley 46 into driving engagement with the face of the clutch member 24.
In operation a coil of metal 51 from the annealing oven is placed upon the metal. receiving member 6, the inner end 10 of the coil being inserted in the slot provided for that purpose at the upper end of the shaft 3 or connected tothe member 6 in any other suitable manner. The outer end 52 of the coil is then led over to the member 23 and secured to the extension 53 of the stub shaft 20 provided for that'purpose, where the end of the coil is secured in any suitable manner as by inserting it in a slot provided therein. The removable separator 33 is then led up over a pulley 54 mounted in the flange 18 and over to the end 52 of the metal strip. The controlling lever 50 is then opera ted to bring either the clutch member 45 or 46 into engagement with the clutch member 24 depending upon which direction it is desired tocoil the metal, and assuming that the motor 34 has already been set in motion, movement of the pulley 46 or 45, as the case may be, into engagement with the clutch 24 will cause the gear 25 to rotate, which in turn, will drive the gear 22 connected directly to' the coil-receiving member 23 through the medium of gears 26 and 28. The spool 32 carrying the separator 33 is at this time running free and as the coil receiving member 23 is rotated, as just described, the metal will be unwound from the coil upon'the metal receiving member 6 and rewound upon the member 23 with the separator 33 interposed between the wraps of the coil.
After the metal has all been transferred from the member 6 to the member 23, the latter is brought to rest. The'separa-tor 33 is then placed in a guide slot 55 in a guide member 56 of glass or other suitable material, said member being supported by an arm 57 secured to the member 17, the guide member being located substantially inline with the axis of rotation of the coil-receiving member 23.
The foot pedal 43 is then depressed to bring the clutch member or pulley 39 into simultaneous engagement with the clutch member 38 and pulley 31. The motor3 being in motion will then drive the spool 32 carrying the separator 33 to pull the separator from between the wraps of the metal coil on the member 23 and rewind it upon the spool 32, leaving the wraps of said coil separated from each other.
If the coil now be placed in a pickling bath it will be seen that the pickle has free access to the coil of metal throughout its entire length.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a very simple and inexpensive apparatus whereby a coil of metal may be wound up under power and yet have the wraps of the coil separated or spaced from each other for the purpose set forth.
It will be apparent also that the time required to rewind the coil with the separator between the wraps of the metal is very short and that the method as a whole is much that the direction of rotation of the coil receiving member 23 is optional as the pulleys l5 and 46 will drive the clutch member in either direction, depending upon which of these pulleys is clutched in; also if it be de sired to stop the coil receiving member 23 quickly, this can be done by merely operating the clutch lever 50 to throw out one clutch and throw in the reverse.
It is to be understood that the apparatus herein described is merely illustrative, and that changes therein may be made within the purview of this invention.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a metal-coiling apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coilreceiving member, a separator for separa ing the wraps of a metal. coil coiled upon said receiving member, and means for removing said separator to leave the metal coiled upon the receiving member with the wraps thereof spaced from each other.
2. In a metal coiling apparatus, the combination of a separator for separating or spacing the wraps of a coil of metal, and means for removing said separator while the metal is in a coiled up condition to leave the wraps of the metal coil separated from each other. 7
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil-receiving member, a removable separator means for actuating said coil-receiving member to wind a coil of metal on the same with said separator interposed between the wraps thereof, and means for removing said separator to leave the metal coiled up with the wraps thereof separated or spaced from each other.
4-. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a plurality of metal coilreceiving members, a removable separator, means for unwinding the metal coil from one of said coil-receiving members and rewinding the same upon another of said members with the separator interposed between the wrapsof the metal, and power operated means for removing the separator from the coil to leave the wraps of the metal coil separated from each other.
5. In an apparatus for treating metal, the combination of a metal coil-receiving member, a separator, a power-driven metal coil-receiving member for winding the metal from the first-named receiving member into a coil with the separator interposed between the wraps thereof, and means for removing the separator to leave the metal in a coiled-up condition with the wraps thereof spaced from each other.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a metal coil-receiving member, a separator, means for receiving said separator, driving means for said metal coil-receiving member to cause a strip of metal to be coiled thereon with the separator interposed between the wraps of the metal, the receiving element for the separator being operable independently of the driving means for the metal coil-receiving member.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil-receiving member, a removable separator, means for actuating said coil-receiving member to wind a metal strip in a coil upon said member with the separator interposed between the wraps thereof, power-operated means for actuating said coil-receiving member in winding the metal and for removing the separator from said coil while the metal remains in a coiledup condition.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coilreceiving member, a removable separator, means for rotating said coil-receiving member to coil a length of metal upon the same with said separator interposed between the wraps of the coil, a receiver for the separator, and guiding means for said separator for guiding the same as the separator is drawn from between the wraps of the coil of metal and wound upon its receiver. 7
