Description

Nov. 8, 1927.
T. A. BEHRENDS ADJUSTABLE PLOWSHARE Filed March 22, 1926 INVENTCIH ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 8, 1927.
UNITED STATES TONY A. BEHRENDS, OF HAVANA, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE PLOWSHARE.
Application filed March 22, 1926.
This invention relates to plows, and more particularly to mechanism adapted to adjustably relate a conventional plow share with respect to the mold board, with the idea of compensating for the wear upon the mold board.
The object of the invention is in the provision of means for adjusting a plow share with respect to a mold board, to gradually change the wearing surface upon the mold board, and thereby considerably lengthen the life of the plow.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation showing a plow member, the same being upended with the land side downward.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown merely one of the bottoms of a conventional gang plow, inasmuch as the present application is directed merely to an adjustable feature with relation to the plow share and mold board.
o find the well known mold board 10, adapted to be supported in any desired manner upon the supporting frame of a plow, not shown. A frog 11 is suitably bolted or attached to the mold board 10, and provides the support and guiding means for the con ventional plow share 12. A bracket or brace 13, attached as at 14 and 16, to the mold board and frog, respectively, provides the attachment means for the detachable plow share 12, said attachment means including a single bolt member 17, having one end 18 encircling a lug 19 on the detachable share 12, the opposite end of the bolt 17 having a nut 20 securely holding the bolt, and therefore the share 12 with respect to the mold board and frog 11. A bolt 15 is fixed to the share and engages in a slot 22 of the frog, and a projection 23 is adapted to bear against the under surface of the share to hold it in operative position.
In the cross-sectional view of Fig. 2, the position of the detachable share 12 with respect to the mold board 10 and frog 11 may be clearly seen, as well as the adjustable feature now to be described. Although the detachable share 12 is held securely with respect to the frog 11, and mold board 10,

nevertheless it is possible to slightly elevate same with respect to the mold board by screwing adjustable members 21 through the frog and having their projecting ends abutting the under side of the share 12. These adjustable members are actually set screws having lock nuts 22 threaded thereon to insure maintenance of position of the share when adjusted to a desired position.
As stated before, although the share is held in a substantially rigid manner with respect to the frog, nevertheless to change the wearing surface upon the mold board, it is merely necessary to screw up the desired adjustable lug to raise slightly the share with respect to the mold board.
Considerable experimentation with plow structures of the type above described, in comparison with conventional plow mechanism, which would constitute all of the elements above described except the adjustable feature, has shown that the gradual raising of the detachable share to vary the point of wear on the mold board, has increased greatly the life of the plow.
It is well known that the share has a much shorter life than the remainder of the plow device, and is almost always replaced at short intervals. The farmer usually finds the original plow share considerably thicker than the marketed replacement shares, with the result that a replacement share does not conform to exact alignment with the mold board. Under these circumstances, the adjustable feature has the added improved result of being able to raise the share to the position of the original share, and thereafter to further raise the share to compensate for the wear upon the mold board, which greatly increases the life of the share.
\Vhat I claim is:
A plow comprising a frog, a moldboard secured to said frog, a share disposed in abutting relation to said moldboard and overlying said frog, a bracket fixedly secured to said frog and said moldboard, and adjustable engaging means between said bracket and said share, including a threaded member adjustab'ly connecting said share with said bracket, and a plurality of adjusting screws extending through said frog and abutting against said share.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
TONY A. BEHRENDS.
