DETACHABLE HANDLE.
Application filed August 23, 1926. Serial No. 130,905.
This invention relates to devices for attaching bails to pails; and objects of this invention are to provide a novel and improved attaching device having the simple and unique features of construction and arrangement hereinafter pointed out.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of 'a pail equipped with the bail attaching device; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the members comprising the attaching device;
and Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises-a pail A having a roll or head B at its upper edge. Pails of this character are commonly used to contain lead, paint-0r the like, and although these pails are considerably valuable, afterthe'contents are used, the pail is discarded. It will be appreciated that if a handle could be readily attached to the pail so that it could be conveniently carriechthe usefulness of the pail would be greatly increased. Y
In accordance with this invention, a bail attaching device'may be readily and conveniently attached to the head 13 on the pail, one on each side of the pail to which the bail may be attached. This enables the pail to be carried from place to place, thereby pro-' longing the utility of the pail. As shown, the bail attaching device comprises plates 1 and 2, and these plates are placed on opposite sides of the side wall of the pail A, the plate 2 having round-ed portions or curved strzi ps 3 which fit over the bead B. The plate 1 is formed with a body portion 4: of elongate rectangular form, and integral with the upper portion of the body 4 is a reduced extension 5 having inturned lips 6 at opposite sides which converge toward the upper end. In this manner, a tapered channel 7 is by Letters Patent is The extension 10 tapers inwardly toward the upper end portionand is adapted to fit into In applying the device to the pail A, the l I plate 2 is attached to the pail over the bead B, and thereafter the plate 1 is fitted over the tapered extension 10 of the plate 2 so as securely to. attach theplates 2. The plate 1 is forced downwardly past the opening 11 of the plate 2. Thereafter, the eye 12 of the bail may be inserted through the opening 11. It will be readily understood that other ways of assembling the device may be resorted to, but the above illustrates one manner of procedure.
It is to he understood that the above description is given by way of illustration and not of limitation, and numerous changes in details of construction, arrangement and choice of materials may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention, as define-d in the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure A detachable bail for pails having their upper edges formed .with a bead, comprising a substantially elongated plate having an opening adjacent its upper end, said plate having a curved portion intermediate .its ends adapted to engage over said head, the plate above the curved'portion having inwardly tapering side edges terminating in a pair of shoulders adjacent said curved portion, a second plate having a notched upper edge formed with a pair of inwardly tapering guide members adapted to receive the tapered portion of the first named plate, the
lower ends of said guide members contacting with the shoulders of the first named plate to restrict downward movement thereof, and a bail having an eye portion adapted to be received through the opening ofthe first named plate and engageable with the notched upper edge of the second plate to prevent vertical movement of the latter.
In testimony. whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE POLHAMUS.
