IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAMPS AND OIL-CANS.
' Specification forming part of Letters `Patent No. 164,766, dated June 22, 1875; application led l March 20, 1875.
To altwhom it may concern:
4Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROBERTS, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a 'new and useful Improved Combined Lamp and Oil-Gan, of which the following is a specilication:
The invention will lirst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention. p
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The drawing is shown mainly in longitudinal section to show the construction. This combined lubricator and lamp is composed ofY a tube, A, irl-which there is a cross-partition, B, which divides the ltube into two parts, one of which, C, contains the lubricating-oil, the other, D, contains the lamp-oil. .E is the oilingtube, which projects from the front end and passes through the lamp-oil compartment D, and through the partition B, as seen in the drawing. F is the lamp-wick, which extends up through the lamp-burner Gr and tube H, placed on top ot the front end, or directly over the lamp-oil chamber. I is the handle on the opposite end of the lubricating chamber U. The oil for lubricating is introduced through the aperture J, which is closed by the removable cap K. Air is admitted through the tube L, which tube is closed bythe spring thumblever m. N is a iiange on the bottom, which allows the article to stand in proper position ou the shelf or table.
This combined lamp and oil-can supplies a want long felt by those whose business it is to oil machinery, as by it the oiling and lighting may be done with one hand while the operator supports himself with the other hand. He may ascend or descend a ladder and oil machinery (steamboat-engines, for instance) when in motion with perfect safety, instead of groping in the dark unable to support himself and carry a light and his oil-can at the saine time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- The lever M supported at its power end'by a spring on the handle of the oilcan, resting with the other end upon and holding down an air-valve, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
WILLIAM ROBERTS.
