In the em# bodiment ofthe inventions shown in. both of said applications, the door,in its closed position, is in' engagement with a forked lever mounted-on the sill and 1n the beginning of the movement Vof the door 'swung from, its initial ,position to a position in which it rej leases the door for full movement andsuch forked lever is operatively connected with va lpart whichtmoves with the lever in theinitialv movement ofthe door and isheldlfrom movement by the engagement therewith of a locking device so that theforked lever cannotv have its releasing movement and the door i ,cannotbe opened unless. the car is-atth'e floor and in-position to effect the disengagement of such locking device. In the operationof elevators there sometimeshappens 1 an emergency in which it is necessary-to'open the shaft door When the car is not in position release of the locking device which prevents full opening movement of the door and in the application of John Darby, above mentioned, there is shownV andv described and claimed broadly an emergency release de-V vice, by the operation of vvhich from the hall,
that is from the side of the door and elevatorl 4 casing remote from the car, it is possible to disengage the locking device and permit the door to be opened. The present invention.
relates to means whereby, under such circumstances, the door can be released for opening ,and its purpose is to provide a differentl andA in some installations perhaps val preferable form of emergency release directly'related i. li r 1 t v r Application med Novembeaejwae. vserial 15f i,"'zoo.-fv

In a suitable bracket `b securedito veach Hoor in'lproximity to the rear'edge of the door a, When in its closed position, is
mounted a forked lever c for engagement yvvitlrthe roller bearingr stud a2 carried by the door a. In the closed position of the door, the forked lever stands in the position shovvn by full lines in Figure Sfand as the effective opening movement of the door be- ',gins, the lever` 0 is swung qfrom thefull line position to the successive positions indicated by broken lines, thestud, in thefitel'ided recesses@ ci the door, passies ever iadb-es Vyond the right-.hand member ofthe forked I lever. 'anddescribed in ysaid application of John Darbyfand the'dog fis disengaged from the stop to permit movement ofthe slide Ve and therefore movement of the forked ,lever c and `therelease ofthe ydoor for full opening movement, as fully described in' said application Iof J ehnv Darby. These devicesV form no part of the -present invention and therefore need not be 'describedin detail herein, it being sufficient to say that so long asthe dog f is in engagement with the stop, the slide cannot be moved and the forked lever cannot be 'moved to release the door unless it is itself released.l YIt is with the devices for effecting f -such releaseof the forked leverand therefore permittingthe full opening ofthe door When fthe car vis not at the floor and the opening of the door would otherwise vbe prevented, that therewith, as at c2.
the present invention is particularly con- C'Q'Iiled.
A s shown particularly in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the forked lever cis mounted on a fixed stud 03. but is not itself directly connected 'with the connecting Vrod d. On v`the same axis With the lever c is mounted alocking member c4, Which has the rod d connected The locking member vc" lis adapted to be connected With the lever c to move therewith and to be disconnected therefrom in an emergency. As shown, the `l'nem'berjC, is notched, asa-t c2, for engage thus far referred tofare ar.
ment with a latch 06, which is hung lon the lever c and is held normally in engagement `Withthe locking member 04 by a spring c7.
In the door a, in position adjacent tothe forked lever, Whenv the ydoor is closed, is formed an opening@1 through which can be int-i-Yoducedr a suitable implement, such as a rod a2,by which, from the side remote from` lwith the slide e. i
v"It will be understood that various changes can be made in the `coiristruction shown to suit different conditions of use .and-that the vinvention Ais not restricted tothe particular construction shown and described herein, except asmay be pointed out in the claims.
I claim as lmy invention: Y
'1. In an elevator, the combination ofl a movable door. a forked'lever engaged by the door in its closed position and adapted to swing to release the door, a locking member normally movable with the forked lever, a locking device to prevent movement of such locking member, and a releasable connection between the forked lever and the locking member operable to release the forked lever for independent movement when the locking member is locked against movement.
2. In an elevator, the combination of a movable door, a forked lever engaged bythe door in its closed position and adapted to swing to release the door, a locking member pivoted .coaxially with the forked lever, a locking device to `prevent movement of sucn locking member, and alatch normally connecting the forked lever andthe vlocking member and disengageable to permit independent movement of the forked lever vvhen the locking member islocked against movement. f
This specification signed this `23rd day :of November A. D. 1926.
