To all 107mm it may concern 15e it known that lf, l/VLADYsLAw MmLoA- man, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing 4at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, Ahave invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Safety Devices for Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety devices for elevators.
lt is a well-known fact that many elevator shafts have landings which permit the catching of a passengers hand or foot between the floor or other part of the elevator and the sill or lintel of such a landing. Good practice demands that not only shall the shaft be provided with a door but that the car itself should be so provided. I am aware that devices have been used to prevent opening of a shaft door when the elevator is not opposite the same, but the automatic locking of the car door itself has been neglected in the art.
rllhe primary object of this invention is to provide a means upon an elevator for the prevention of any movement of the car while the elevator door is in its open position and it is designed to lock the controlling lever against actuation at all times excepting when the door is closed.
A further object is to provide a device designed for the prevention of accidents upon elevators and adapted to automatically lock the controller lever against movement when the elevator door is opened for the exit and entrance of passengers.
A still further object is to provide a locking means for an elevator controller whereby such controller is automatically locked against movement upon an opening of the elevator door and is automatically released when the door is closed.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure l is a horizontal transverse view taken through the elevator shaft and car. Fig. 2 is a ver` tical transverse sectional detail view taken upon line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a vertical detail sectional view taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking means detached from the elevator car, and, Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the controller and the locking pin therefor.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the elevator shaft or casing 10 is illustrated provided with the elevator 11 mounted for vertical movement therein in the ordinary manner and provided with the sliding door 12.
The controller lever 14 for turning on and off the motive power for running the elevator is positioned at a convenient point within the car and pivoted adjacent its lower end as at 15, while a bracket 16 is positioned at one side thereof and adapted for sliding contact therewith. A locking pin 17 projecting within a transverse orifice of the bracket is provided with an angular downwardly projecting arm 19 slidably mounted in guides 20 beneath the car and pivoted at its free end to a rod 21, which rod is pivoted as at 22 to the car bottom while its free end is hingedly connected as at 23 to the rod 19. A coil spring 24 is attached to the rod 21 and also to a permanent position upon the bottom of the car and exerts its tension to normally project the pin 17 through the transverse orifice and into the path of movement of the controller lever 14, and thereby preventing a movement of such lever from the inoperative position, at which time the motive" power is turned off or disconnected. A fur ther angular lever 25 is hinged to the rod 21 and extending upwardly and outwardly is provided with a terminal roller 26 posi tioned in the path of an inclined block 27 secured to the inner face of the door.
From this description it will be seen that while the door 12 is open, the spring 24 normally projects the finger 17 in its locking position with respect to the controller lever 14, and thereby preventing an actuation of the controller lever for the purpose of turning on the power at any time when the door is open. Upon closing the door, the block 27 engaging the roller 26 moves the rod 21 upon its pivot, thereby shifting the lever 19 and its locking finger 17, and thus releasing the controller lever and whereby such lever may be readily shifted for regulating the speed of the elevator and controlling the motive-power therefor. The elevator is thus provided Vwith an automatic means for allowing the controller to operate When the door of the car is closed but locked against operation When the door is open, it being understood that` such opening and closing of the door takes place When the car is standing still..
While the form of the invention herein vshown and described is What is believed to ybe the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modilications thereof may be had Without departing from the spirit and scope or the invention as claimed.
