BOOKMARK.
Application filed April 3, 1926. Serial No. 99,642.
This invention relates to improvements in book marks, and more particularly to a device embodying a page separating arm with the body portion therefor providing a certain amount of tortional tension to the arm, and with the body portion adapted to be detachably secured to a book cover for indicating the last page read upon the re-opening of a book. The principal object of the invention is to provide a book mark of a single length wire formation, which is particularly adapted for use on books, magazines, and other periodicals of like character, for re taining and indicating the next following page by separating the preceding pages therefrom, and further provided with means for imparting tortional tension to the device for holding a book in open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a book mark as specified, which is simple in construction and operation, cheap to manufacture, readily applied to a book, magazine, or the like, and one which will not injure or obstruct the turning of the pages which are held separated by the extended arm comprising the book mark.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book in open position, with the book mark attached thereto in operative position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with only the rear cover of a book extended in open position, indicating the manner of-attaching the device thereto.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device per se.
Figure 4 is an end view of the device per se.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of the device. 7
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the invention comprises a single length of wire 10 preferably spring wire, bent upon itself intermediate its ends 11 and 12, to pro vide a depending tongue 13 with the free end portions 14 and 15 extended upwardly. The free end portion 14 is bent at right angles, as at 16, and extends laterally to the right-hand side of the tongue 13, to form the arm 17, and again bent at right angles, as at 18, to provide the depending page engaging finger 19 with the extreme free end thereof bent upon itself to provide the rounded end 20 for preventing injury to the pages of a book, or the like. The free end portionfl5 is bent upon whereupon another bend is made at a point. indicated at 21. The end portion 15 is then extended across and'to the rear of the tongue 1.3, to a point indicated at 22, where a similar bend occurs for extending thewire up wardly at an acute angle to a point adjacent the bend indicated at 16, and parallel with the arm 17, where the'wire is again bent upon itself, as at23, for extending the remaining end '11, of the end portion 15, downwardly, parallel with and adjacent the leftside of the tongue 13 to a point intermediate the arm 17 and the laterally extended lower portion 24, comprising the attaching.- clip formed on the tongue 13.
The extreme point ofthe end portion 15, is finally bent atright angles to the tongue 13 and overlaps the end portion 14 comprising the left side of-thetongue 13. A tie plate 26 is secured to the upstanding'end portion 14 and15intermedi ate the'lower-clip portion 24, and the bottom end of the tongue 13 by rolling the ends 27. of the plate 26 around the end portions 14 and 15, for providing the arm 17 and the depending finger 19 thereof, with sufiicient tortional tension for holding down the pages of a book without interfering with the turning of the pages thereof.
The modified form of the invention as illustrated in'Figure 5 of the drawing, comprises a metal stamping 10" which is blanked out from a sheet. of metal, and formed to simulate the configuration of the device, as shown in the preferred wire form.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the'accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent that I have provided asimple and novel type of bookmark which is readily attached to a book cover, and which permits the pages to be turned to the left in the usual manner without tearing or otherwise injuring the pages, and while I have shown and described my invention,
I do not however, limit myselfthereto, ex- 7 1 cept as set forth pended.
VVha-t I claim is V 1. A book mark comprising a single length of wireb'ent intermediate its ends to provide a tongue, one side portion of said tongue in the claims hereunto apthe free; end of said opposite side portion terminatingin a depending portion parallel with and adj acentthe opposite side portion of said tongue, the extreme end thereof bent atright angles to overlap the-said opposite side portion of said tongue, to impart a tortional tension to said arm and finger, and a tie plate secured to andintermediate the side portions comprising said tongue to maintain said side portions in spaced parallel relation. 7
2. A book mark constructed from a single length of wireand comprising a pair of loops'to straddle the back of a book, each ofsaid loops having side members, the upper end of one ofthe said members of the loop engages with the inner face of the book back having a right angle extending arm terminating in a right angle extending finger for engagement betweenlthe pages of a book, the upper end of the corresponding side member oftheother loop, which engages with the outer face of the book back having an arm parallel with the side member which has the first arm, the extremity of the secondarm having an offset bend terminating in a latstraddle the back ofabook and which comprises side members, one end of one of; the side members of one of the loops having an arm at right angles to the loop and terminating in a fingerat its extremity to eng age between the pages of the book, one end of one of the said members of the: other loop having an arm substantially arallel with the side member having the rst armpthe second arm terminating in a lateral extension with an offset portion to overlie one of the said members which has the first arm tc retain the side member in position when a tortional tension is imparted to the first arm, and a tie plate secured to the side members of one of the loops for maintaining, said side members in spaced parallel relation, when a tortional strain is exerted on the side mem: her, the extremity of the page engaging a finger having a rolled loop to engage between the pages and avoid injuring. the pages. p In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature.
