IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,620, dated June 15, 1875 application filed May 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. WATSON, of Lexington, in the county of Holmes and State of Mississippi, IIEINB invented a new and Improved Portable Lighter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view.
The invention contemplates the introduction to the public of a simple and useful device by which a person may quickly strike a light in a dark room, or under other circumstances where it would be otherwise difficult.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a box, made preferably, although not necessarily, of tin, and provided with acover, B, hinged to the body 0. In the middle of the former 1 place a scraping-surface, I), while in the middle of the latter I affix, longitudinally, the match-box O, which may be subdivided into two sections. This box is rigidly attached to the body at each end, but otherwise loose and elastic, so as to allow, by lateral pressure, an extra candle, D, to be easily removed. The body is thus divided into three cells, 0 c 0 At one end of the cell c, and slightly inside of its edge, is hinged a candlestick, E, in which may be kept a candle, F. By opening the box, turning back the stick with its candle and drawing a match across the scraper, a light may be obtained in a moment.
I am aware that it is not new to make a match-box with a hinged candlestick that folds in or out thereof 5 but What I claim is The combination, in a match-box, of three cells, 0 e 0 of which the middle one is movahle at its center, as shown and described, for the purpose of holding matches, a candle, and a hinged candlestick, in separate compartments.
