Thisinvention relatesin general to-musicallfinstruments such as slide trombones, but more specifically .the invent-ion relates to the valve mechanism for vreleasing the water or moisture which accumulates .in .the sliding member'rof the instrument. f
Heretoforevalves of this character have been provided but. the valve being located at the base or. outer endof the-sliding member, access thereto has been difficult as it is necessary Afor the 'user to reach tothe end ofthe slidingimember to actuate the valve, requiringholding of theinstrumerit in an awkward or unnatural position, to drain the moisture therefrom. It is one of the .objectsof the present invention to provide. an. improved .const-ruction of. valve tand operating mechanism therefor in an instrument. of this character whereby thevalve may*A be'operated from la pointfadjacent theihand holding., portion of the slide, and which mechanism will be in a convenient position and at the same time will not prese-nt an unsightly appearance to the instrument.
To the'attainment of Athese ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction. combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing lillustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trombone having a valve and operating mechanism constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto.

Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates generally the horn portion of a trombone, 11 the slide member and 12 the mouth piece, the slide member being provided with a cross bar 13 forming a. hand hold and the horn member being provided with cross bars or braces 14 by which the horn member may be grasped.

An operating knob or button 25 is connected with the flexible member 22 and preferably telescopes into the enlarged portion 24. Within this portion 24 is arranged a resilient element preferably in the form of a coil spring 26, which encompasses the flexible member 22. One end of the spring abuts the base of the enlarged portion 24 and the other end abuts the extremity of the knob or button 25.
The normal tendency of the resilient element 26 is to move the lever 18 in a direction to cause the valve 17 to be seated so that it will close the discharge outlet opening 15. This will cause the knob or button 25 to be projected beyond the extremity of the enlarged portion 24 of the .casing so that when the operator is holding the instrument the knob or button 25 will be in a convenient position to be engaged by one of the fingers of the hand which grips the brace or hand holding portion 13 of the slide member 11.
