IMPROVEMENT IN WORK-HOLDING DEVICES FOR METAL'PLANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,594, dated June 15, 1875; application filed September 9, 1874.

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS B. PROUTY, of the city of Worcester and State of Massachusetts,have invented a Planer-J aw, of whic the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to hold work to be planed directly upon the table of the planer by means of an adjustable binding-jaw, 0 P, acting against the edge or side of the work, the opposite side being held by studs driven into the planer-table, or by any usual device.
P represents the bed-plate, which rests upon the planer-table, having at its rear side a raised ledge, through which passes the binding-screw R. The point of the screw R, impinging against the rear side of the jaw O, presses the opposite face of the said jaw against the work to be held. The jaw O rests upon the bedplate P, and has a ledge projecting down in front of said bed-plate to the planer-table. The clamping-bolt T, having its head fastened in a hole or slot in the planer-table most convenient to the work, passes up through a hole or slot in the bed-plate P, th'ence through a slot in the sliding jaw O, andhas a screw-nut on its upper end, which, pressing on the top of the jaw O, binds said jaw and the bedplate P together, and both to the planer-table. Said bed-plate and jaw are both free to turn upon the bolt T independent of each other, so as to face the work at any angle.
I am aware that a patent was granted to H. Sherwood May 19, 1874, for a device simi lar to that which I have described, but from which my device differs in these essential particulars, viz.: that the jaw O, unconfined laterally, is capable of being placed at different angles, and that, being once properly directed and forced against the work, it may be clamped directly to the bed-plate P. and the planertable by a force that shall bind them all together. I therefore disclaim the invention described in the patent above named and I claim as my invention- The improved device, consisting of the parts 0 P, screw-bolt T, nut Y, and screw It, constructed and combined substantially as herei shown and described.
