STAKE POCKET FOB VEHICLES.

This invention relates to the pockets ern ployed at the sides of vehicles to receive the lower ends of load retaining stakes, and my object is to devise a form of pocket which releasably retains the-stake in position and which is adapted for remote control.
I attain my object by providing each pocket with a gate or gates and with releasable-means, adapted for remote control, for looking the gates in their closed position,
means are also provided for forcibly ejecting the stake after the gates have been opened. The whole is constructed-in detail as hereinafter more specifically described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a plan view of a stake pocket constructed in accordance with my invention;

In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a back plate, on which are formed lugs 2 forming two spaced sets of hinge knuckles. Grates 3 are formed with hinge knuckles co-operating with the lugs 2 aforesaid and pivot-ally connected therewith by means of the hinge pins 5. The space between the lugs is suflicient to receive the lower end of a stake 6,'the back platelforming the back of the pocket, the lugs 2the sides,'and the gates-3 the front of the pocket.
Fiach gate is provided with a tail 7 extending away from the pocket. At its lower end each gate is provided with a lug 8 adapted to engage a shoulder 9 formed on the adjacent lug 2. Theselugs and shoulders thus form stops limiting the closing movement of the gates. On each hinge pin 5 is positioned a coil spring 10, one end of each spring being connected with one of the lugs 2 and the other with the gate. These springs tend to close the gates. The gates are adapted to be locked in their closed position by means of latches 11 adapted to move to and from a position between the tails and the back plate 1. i
In Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings I show the latches 11 as, rectilinearl'y slidable in the guides l2. The. latches are operated means" of cranks 13 clamped on a square shaft 14:, the cranks being connectedby means of pivoted connecting rods 15'wit-h their respective latches.
In Figs. 6 and f7 slight modification is illustrated, each latch 11: being provided with round projections 16 adapted toslide in the grooved guides 17 formed on the back plate. The crank 13 is pivoted directly to the lower end of the latch, so that the latter must necessarily rock on its projections "16 as it'is moved to and from its operative position. A rearwardly extending projection 18 is provided on each latch adapted to engage the back plate to limit its movement when it is thrown up to it'soperatiVe position engaging. behind the tail 7 To support the lower endof the stake and to provide means'for positively ejecting the lower end of a stake when the gates are re leased, I provide arotatable supporting and ejecting member 19. This is formed of a clamp ;20 adapted to be clamped about the square shaft-14. The member 19 is formed with an arc-shaped supporting surface 21 so that, as the shaft is rotated to release the latches, no upward movement is imparted to the stake. Afshoulder 22 is formed on the member 19 which, when the latches re fully released, comesto a position to engage the lower back corner of the stake and thus, asthe s aft is. fu the r tat dffo ce th stake outward, in casefor any, reason it has become stuck or jammed so that, the, pres sure of the load does not ejectit'. 'The clamp 20 has a cylindrical projection 23 which has a bearing in ,the lug2fl formed on ,the'back plate 1.- As every stake pocket along the length of the vehicle is similarly constructed, suitable bearings are thus provided for 1 0 the shaft 14. At one or both ends the shaft will be provided with operating means, such as now known in the art, and which requires no specific description.

1. A stake pocket having a back plate and an open front; a fpair of hinged gates forming the front 0 the pocket and adapted when closed to retain a stake in the pocket; springs tending to close the gates; a tail on 110 each gate extending laterally from the pocket; and releasable locks carried'by the back plate adapted to engage the tails remote from the pocket to retain the gates in their pocket closing position.

A stake pocket having a back plate and an open front; a pair of hinged gates forming the front of the pocket and adapted when closed to retain a stake in the pocket; a tail on each gate extending laterally from the'pocket and releasable locks carried by the back plate adapted to engage the tails remote from'the pocket to retain the gates in their pocket closing position.
