UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. WELSHANS, OF AULLVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,500, dated June 15, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH L. WELSHANS, of Aullville, in the county of La Fayette and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows an elevation of one panel ofmy-improved fence. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line as m. Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2, taken on the line $1- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This fence is composed of posts and rails, the panels being stayed by vertical battens clamped to the rails by means oftwist-ed wires.
A are the rails. B B represent the posts. The post B is made of two uprights, O D, which are placed facing each other, having pins E to support the rails. The rails are kept in place, therefore, without nails, and are allowed to lap past each other, as seen at G, which obviates the necessity of sawing. The post B is supported by a transverse sill, H, and
brace I. This brace I is notched to fit the rails and uprights, as seen in Fig. 1. The posts are made with stay-blocks between the rails, and so that the rails of two panels lap past each other when they are secured by the pins E. The corner postis made as represented at K, Fig. 2. L L are battens for supporting the rails. No nails are used in fastening them, but one batten is placed on each side of the fence, and they are clamped tightly by means of wire bands m, more or less in number.
This fence is made in panels, which are put together with the pins E, and the rails may be removed by removing the pins wherever and whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A portable fence-panel, composed of rails A, pivoted in the posts B B, and. secured in a central clamp, L, which is tied near top and bottom, and the braces H I, all combined substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH L. WELSHANS.
