SCREW CAP FOR CONTAINERS.

My invention relates to screw caps for containers, and an object is to provide a cap of this kind which has a hinged attachment to the neck of the container so that the cap when unscrewed canbe swung to expose the mouth or open neck of the container for filling or emptying the container, and cannot become lost or misplaced. My improved cap may be used in combination with automobile radiators, gasoline tanks, and various other containers such as chemical containers.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate two slightly difierent forms of my invention,-
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of one form of the device. Fig. 2 is a view thereof in central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section on the line 33 of 2 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view in central vertical section showing a slight modification.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the filling neck of any suitable or customary container. The neck 10 is externally screwthreaded at its outer end to receive the internal screw threads of a cap 12 provided with a gasket 14 for engaging the end of the neck when the cap is screwed down. An ear 16 is secured at its lower end to the exterior surface of the neck in suitable manner as by'soldering or welding. The car 16 above its pla'ce of attachment is turned outwardly and then turned upwardly to provide an upper member 18 which is bent back on itself to provide a member 20 which is spaced from the member 18 so as to form a vertical slot 22. As will be apparent from Fig. 4,'the middle portion of the member 18 is cut away to form a gap 24 which extends down nearly to the outturned portion of the ear. This gap also continues into the upper end of the member 20 so as to form a stop shoulder 25. The cap 10 near its lower end is provided with an external circumferential groove into which fits a wire 26 bent into circular shape except that at the two ends it is bent to form the parallel outwardly extending members 28 which in turn are bent away from each other to form the hingelike members 30 which are received in the slot 22. The members 28 pass through the gap 24 as will be understood from Figs. 3 and 4. The form shown in Fig. 5 diifers from that already described in the provision of a collar 32 whose lower end is internally threaded for engaging the externally threaded upper end of the neck 10 and whose upper end is externally threaded to receive the internal threads of the cap 12. The ear 16 is secured to the collar 32 in suitable manner as by soldering or welding. The collar is provided with a set screw 34 by means of which the collar may be securely fastened in place on the neck after it has been screwed down.
The operation and advantages of my invention will now be obvious. The cap is readily turned within the circular portion of the wire 26, the vertical slot 22 ermitting the wire to rise and fall according to the direction of rotation of the cap for screwing and unscrewing the same. The gap 24 receives the parallel members 28 and permits the cap to be swung over when completely unscrewed. The stop shoulder 25 is then engaged by the parallel members 28 so that the cap is maintained in substantially horizontal position without dropping down upon the container. The form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 would be attached in lace when the radiator or other receptac e is first made. The form shown in Fig. 5 is made so that it can be attached to an old receptacle after removal of the old cap. 1 The collar 32 is then screwed onto the neck and the set screw 34 is turned down to secure the collar permanently in place.
I claim:
In combination with the neck of a container having exterior threads on its upper end, a cap having internal threads for engagement with said exterior threads, said cap having an external circumferential groove, a wire having a circular portion fittingsnugly into said groove and permittin rotation of said cap, said wire having en portions bent outwardly to form parallel members and the latter being bent at right angles to form oppositely extendin hin 0 members, and an ear carried b sai nec said ear having a, vertical slot or receiving and ermitting up and down movement of sai hinged members and said ear also being cut out at its middle portion to form a stop shoulder for engagement by said parallel members whereby said cap is maintained substantially horizontal when swung into open position.
