IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK-HINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,4 [0, dated June 15, 1875 application filed May 5, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoHN AIRMAN, of the township of Norwich, in the county of Oxford, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, farmer, have invented certain Improvements in Hinges for Outside Window-Blinds, Barn-Doors, Gates, &c., of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to a self-acting hinge, so constructed that the window-blind can be opened from the outside only, and, when opened, is held in its place by the action of the hinge without holders or fasteners on the walls, as are now used, as will be hereinafter fully described and definitely claimed.

Figure l is a sectional plan view of the hinge, showing the window-blind closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the hinge with the window-blind open, and Fig. 3 shows detail views of the lever detached from the hinge.

Letter A, frame of the window; B, frame or stile of window-blind; O, bottom part of hinge; D, upper part of hinge; E, the pivot or pintle on which the upper part of the hinge works on the lower part; F, a detachable lever or latch, working in the upper part of hinge on the pivot or pintle E; Ur, shoulder on the lower part of hinge O, to check the lever or latch F in the slot H; H, the slot in the lower part of hinge, into which the lever or latch F drops against the shoulder G, when the blind is opened back; I, catch or holder on inside of window-frame to receive the lever or latch F, and to hold the blind shut.

For the purposes of window outside blinds the hinge is fastened with the lower part to the window-frame, and the upper part to the stile or frame of the window-blind, the detachable lever or latch F passing through the stile of the blind. When the blind is closed the lever or latch passes into the holder 1. Thus the blind is held shut.

To open the blind, lift the lever or latch F out of the holder I, and when it is back the lever or latch F drops in the slot H, is checked by the shoulder G, and is held open.

To close the window-blind, lift the lever or latch out of the slot H and draw the blind in. In either case the fasteuings are secure and reliable.

The advantages claimed for this hinge are as follows, namely: As the upper and lower part of the hinge, in combination with the lever or latch, works upon alevel bearing, there is no occasion to lift up, press back, or draw to the blind to open or close it, as is the case with the blind fastening now in use; and, also, there is no occasion to reach out of the window to the fasteners on the wall in opening or closing the blind, as the whole process ot'opening or closing the blind is done from the inside by means of the lever or latch in the stile of the blind. This hinge is also adapted to barn-doors or gates. For them it is attached in the same way as before described for window-blinds, but has a rod or wire attached .to the end of the lever or latch, and connected with the thumb-latch, so that it can be lifted out of the holder (on the inside of the frame) in order to open the door; and the door opening back, the lover or latch falls into the slot in the hinge, and is held open, as before described.

In all cases the hinge is only used right and left hand, to suit the double blinds or doors on the lower part of the frame, the upper hinge being the ordinary hinge now in use.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The detachable lever or latch F, working in the hinge on the pivot or pintle E, and fitting through the stile of the blind B, in combination with the holder or catch I on the window-frame, substantially as shown and described.

2. The slot H in the lower part of the hinge O, in combination with the detachable lever or latch F and the shoulder Gr, all operating together substantially as and for the purposes above set forth.
