Description

' Sept. ,2 7, 1927.`
S.- NORTHMORE HANGER FOR OVERHEAD TRACKWYSv Filed March 16. 1927 FITT'ENEY Patented Sept. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERY COMPANY, OLE
FAIRFIELD, IOWA, A CORPORATION OF IOWA.
HANGER FOR OVERHEAD TRACKWAYS.
Application filed March 16, 1927. Serial No. 175,712.`
My invention relates to supporting hangers for trackwaysused for overhead carrying, and it consists of an improvement in the construction of the parts whereby the lengths of the hangers may be more accurately adjusted, and by this means the trackway may be more accurately adjusted in the positions in which it will be held at different points below the overhead supports7 as may be required in the adjustment of-thetrackway.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hanger embodyingr my invention7 with a short section of a trackway B connected to its lower end. Fig. lis a vertical transverse section on line 2-2 oli' Fig. 1. the lower central portion of the line beiner slightly deflected..V Fig. 3 is a horizontally disposed transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. l, the central portion of the line being also slightly deflected. Fig. fl is detail view.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main body of the hanger which is com-v posed of two mating members made of metal, the upper edge of a track rail` such as that shown by B beiner clamped between the mating members, preferably by abolt C, the lower ends of the` members beine: lerooved to catch over and hold a bead D on the track rail B. The members A are fitted on the upper portions of their inner sides with a pair ot vertically disposed. grooves E. as most plainly shown in Fiq. 3. These efrooved portions are provided with a series of spaced apart holes or recesses the purpose of which will be presently explained.
An inverted U shaped member Gr` which may be called an open ended link having. a head H on each open end, and which may also be called the overhead connecting member. is inserted in the grooves with its heads I-I in certain of the holes or recesses F. as may be required for the adjustment ot the track-rail B in its proper position below its overhead support. The closed end of the link will be connected to the overhead to those skilled in the art. which is therefore notshown. The upper ends ot the members A are held together preferably by a linger I on the upper end of one of 'lhe support in any suit-ablemanner. well known members which is inserted in an adjacent hole J in the other member.
To assemble the parts, thel open ends of the link G are first placed in the grooves ofthe member A having the hole J rwith its heads I-I in the proper holes or recesses F, and the horizontal groove in the lower end of the member is then placed over one side of the bead D. The finger I of the other member A is then placed in the hole J and the lower end of that member is then closed down so its horizontal groove will catch overthe other side of the bead D, and thus hold the track rail B between them. After this vthe bolt C is placed in position and the members A are thus clamped in position on the headed ends of. thel link G and also on the bead D of the track railB. y
I make no claim to the hanger as above described, as my invention resides in the novel manner of arranging' the heads Il on the link G and the novel arrangement of the holes or recesses F in the members A. Heretofore these holes or recessesr on the opposite sides of the members A have been placed in the same horizontal .plane to each other. and the headed ends of the link G have been made of equal lengths so the heads I-I would be in the same horizontal plane to correspond with the holes or recesses Fp. llVhen made in this way the only adjustment of the hanger that could be made was to nieve the heads of the link from the holes or recesses they were occu pying to the holes or recesses immediately above or below them.
My invention consists in staggering the holes or recesses in the members A so the holes or recesses on one side of the members will occupy ahorizontal posit-ion inter- `fnediate of the position of the holes or recesses on the other side, and then making the headed ends ot the link Gr of unequal lengths to correspond withthe positions of i i v10() these holes or recesses. By this means, adjustments one halt less can be made than it the corresponding heads and holes or recesses occupied the same horizontal plane. All that is necessary is to turn the link around so that in lengthening ythe hanger the lone: headed end of the link will occupyv the hole or recess occupied by the short headed end, and in shortening the hanger to one half oil' what could be heretofore done with the prior construction. I have continued throughout the description to use the alternative terms holes or recesses on account of the different materials of which the member A may be made. 'When made of sheet metal and stamped into shape holes have to be punched through the sheets to furnish supports for the heads H, but when made of malleable iron recesses in the inner sides of the members A will be sufficient and need not be extended through to form holes as shown in the drawing.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. In hangers for overhead trackways having a pair orn mating clamping members adapted at their lower ends to be connected to and hold in position a trackway, andv their upper portions being adapted to adjustably clamp and hold a member to be connected to an overhead support, the upper portions of said clamping members being provided on their inner faces with a pair of vertically disposed series of recesses, and
the overhead connecting member being provided with a pair of headed ends adapted `to be inserted in any of the corresponding recesses, to adjust the length of the hanger,
said headed endsand the corresponding re,-
one side to the other.
2. In hangers for overhead trackways having a pair of mating clamping members adapted at their lower ends to be connected to and hold in position a trackway, and their upper portions being provided with a pair of vertically disposed series of vholes or recesses adapted to receive and hold between them a pair of headed ends of an open ended connecting link, whereby the length of the hanger may be adjusted to hold thev trackway in higher or lower positions, said headed ends and the corresponding holes or recesses of one series being set in horizontal planes halt way between the holes or recesses of the other series, as and for the purpose set forth.
