v M. PALEY 7 METHOD OF V-ARYING THE SIZE OF GARMENTS Filed Dec. 24. 1926 WITNESSES INVENTOR mm. W g y w- 17 ATTORNEY MAX PALEY, OF MQN'IIGELLO, NEW YORK.
vmrnon or VARYING THE SIZE or GARMENTS.
Application filed December 24,1926. Serial No. 156,892.
This invention consists in varying the proportionate' size of. a finished garment or coat,
such as those worn by men and boys, in a manner so as to make a garment larger or smaller, as required, to fit the person for whom it is intended, to be of further use to' such person.
The drawing forming a part of the following specificationillustrates certain steps followed in carrying out the method of the present invention, and in which- Figure 1 is an inside view of a coat, substantially one-half ofthe coat being shown,
- and the side seam being'completely opened several viewsof the drawing, it will be apparent that there is illustrated in 1 substantially one-half of a coat, which when and'the armhole seam being partly open preparatory to the relative movement of the front of the coat with respect to the. back of the coat, and the resewing of the seams.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but showing the front of the coat moved down with respect to the back of the coat and resewed preparatory to the rehemming of the skirt of the front to refinish the coat to make it larger in proportionate size, particularly around the breast and shoulders. y i s I Fig. 3 is a view. similar to that shown in Fig.2 except that the coat is made smaller by moving the front up with respect to the back. 7
Referring now more particularly to the completed includes two front sections 10' and 'a back section 11 which are secured together and form a side" seam 12 which extends from theskirt portions of the front and back upwardly to the armhole 13, at which is formed what is known as an armhole seam 1 1; the armhole seam 1 1 being formed as "a result of the sleeve of the coat being attached to the front and back sections 10 and 11. At the armhole seam there is usually incorporated a tape 15 which maintains the shape at this point and prevents the parts from ripping away from each other.
It has been found that a garment of this kind'may be altered to either make the same larger or smaller by completely opening each of the side seams 12 and by partly opening each of the armhole seams 14. It is also necessary to out each of the armhole tapes 15.
shoulders, the front. sections 10 are moved or pulled downwardly with respect to the back section 11 which brings a skirt portion Then to 'enlarge the garment so that 7 there will be more room at the breast and seams are then resewed, and the skirt portions 16 of the front sections 10 are taken up and rehemmed to completely refinish the coat. This will result in the coat being larger about the breast and particularly around the shoulders. Incidental to the steps of this method above mentioned, the tape 15 will be resewed, and if necessary a small piece may be inserted, and the lining. will be resewed.
When it is desired to make a finished 'garment smaller it is only necessary to go through the steps hereinbefore mentioned, except that the front sections 10 will be moved upwardly'with respect to the back section 11. This will result in a skirt portion'of the back section 11 being brought below the lower edges of'the front sections 10, as indicated at 17. The said portion 17 will be taken up and rest-itched, even with the lower edges of the front section 10.
claim:
" 1. The herein described method of varying the proportionate size of a finished coat which consists in completely opening the side seams and partly opening the armhole seams, moving the back of the coat relatively to the front of'the coat along the lines of the former. sideseams, restitching all of the opened seams, and then taking up and rehemming the projecting skirt portion of the coat.
2.'The herein described method of enlarging a finished coat which consists in com pletely opening the side seams and partly opening the armhole seams, moving the front of the coat up with respect to the back of a The herein described method of varying skirt of the I the proportionate size of a. finished coat having taped armholes which consists in com pletely opening the side seams and partly opening the armhole seams, severing the 5 armhole tapes, moving the hack of the coat relatively to the front of the coat along the lines of the former side seams, inserting a piece in each of the armhole tapes, letting out portions of the lining of the coat, restitching all of the opened seams, taking up the projecting skirt portion, and sewing together the portions of thelining let out.
