PORATION, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
FASTENING FOR THE COVERS OF METALLIC DRUMS.
Application ma March 18, 1924. Serial No. 699,976. I
This invention relates broadly to metallic rotation. Following introduction of the drums, and more specifically to a removable cover fastening for such drums. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and comparat-ively'inexpensive form of fastening for the removable caps'or covers employed on metallic barrels or drums of the type commonly used as containers for heavy greases and other semi-solid materials. 7
In describing the 'nvention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan viewof the head end of a drum to which my invention is applied;
Figure 2 is a cross section on line2-2, Fig. 1; V
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section,
showing an attaching bolt carried by the' drum head; V
Figure 4- is a similar section illustrating the means employed for mounting the bolt rigidly in place; and
Figure 5 1s a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modification in the bolt mounting.
I Referring to said drawings, '1 indicates the body and 2 the head of a metallic barrel or drum of a common type. Said head 2 is formed with a comparatively large opening, preferably located centrally, through which access is had for the introduction and removal of'the material contents, said opening being defined, as ordinarily, by a. depending flange 3.
Provided in the metal of the head 2 in encircling suitably spaced relation to said head opening is a plurality of relatively spaced depressed sockets 4. A bolt 5 has the threaded body thereof extending centrally upward through each of said sockets 4:, the head 5 thereof being seated against the under face of the metal which is depressed in forming the socket, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The portion 5 of the bolt body located adjacent .to the head 5* is of polygonal form, and the hole 6 provided therefor in the drum head 2 is of corresponding shape and size for maintaining the bolt against top surface of the metal of the drum head adjacent to the hole 6, thus in effect riveting the bolt to said drum head.
The cap or cover 8, which serves as a closure for the opening in the drum head, has a downwardly dishedform for seating more or less snugly within theembrace of the circularflange 3, and it has an-outer horizontal flange 8 designed to overlie the drum head in encircling relation to said opening,a joint sealing gasket 9 being preferably interposed between the portion of the drum head immediately adjacent to said opening and the overlying portion ,of said flangejS. Said flange has therein a plurality of boltreceiving holes 10, spaced to correspond with the spacing of the bolts and adapted for the reception of the threaded upper ends of said bolts. Nuts 11 screwed upon' said bolts against the. tOp face of the flange 8 serve to I removably secure the cover in place.
I As is apparent, the formation of the sockets 4 in the drum head may, if desired, be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 5.
. Whatis claimed is 2 In a metallic drum, a head having acentral opening therein, and having a plurality of'relatively spaced depressed sockets formed therein in encircling relation to said opening, the metal at the bottom of said sockets having polygonal holes therein, bolts directed upward through and non-rotatably fixed in said holes, said bolts having the portions thereofreceived in said holes of a size and form corresponding to the latter and having portions of the metal thereof swaged downward whereby they are permanently fixed in place, and a sheet metalvcover adapted to be seated in said opening, said cover having ancannular flange provided with holes for the reception of said bolts.
In testimony whereof, I'aflix my signature.
- I WILLIAM M. BELL.
