UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE,
MICHAEL W. SHAW, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,223, dated June 8, 1875; application filed March 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL W. SHAW, of the city and county of Galveston, Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which" the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved bottle-stopper, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in the bottle-stopper of Westel E. Hawkins, patented under date of August 4, 1874, and numbered 153,769, so that the same may be used with greater ease, and'without being liableto wash off the dust and fly-dirt from the outer cap-piece by the liquor rnnnin g over the same.
My invention consists in providing the sliding cap-piece with a circumferential flange or rim to prevent the running of the liquor from the perforated extension over the outside of the cap-piece.
In the drawing, A represents the neck of the bottle-stopper, with the perforated tubular extension B, over which the cap-piece O is fitted to slide thereon by a governing valve-stem, a. When the bottle is tilted the cap slides down and allows the liquor to issue through the perforations of the extension B. The old cap-piece, being of cylindrical shape, allowed the running down of the liquor over its outer surface, so that the liquor Washed off the fly and other dirt thereon, while giving at the same time a needlessly large surface for the spreading and evaporation of the liquor. To obviate that the cap 0 is provided with a circumferential flange or rim, D, at its lower part, which is, preferably, made with suitable inclination, so as to convey the liquor directly from the perforations along the flange to the vessel without any chance of spreading over the outer surface of the cap and washing the dirt off the same.
Q For the readier cleaning of the stopper it would be preferable to allow the cap-piece to slide, by slot and pins, in one direction only Without giving it an axial movement on the valve-stem.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A valve-stopper for bottles provided with flange D, as and for the purpose specified.
- MICHAEL W. SHAW.
