This invention relates to improvements in envelopes and the like and has for its object to provide an envelope provided with means for carrying the envelope in a convenient manner and for maintaining the envelope closed.

More specifically the'invention has for its object to provide an envelope having means for carrying the envelope, which means also serve to maintain the envelope'closed. 1 Further objects of the invention are to provide an envelope which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and which may be quickly and easil-yclosed or opened.

Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the envelope is shown as'comprising a body portion 1 and a flap 2, it being understood that '1I1 construction to that shown in Figs. 4; to

the envelope may be of any desired shape and size and that it may be made in any suitable manner. Extending upwardly from the rear wall of the body portion 1, and preferably formed integral therewith, is a tongue 3 constituting a carrier portion, the

upper end of which projects beyond the envelope and is shaped to form a handle 4 adapted to be grasped by one or more fingers of the hand to permit the envelope to be carried in a convenient manner. The carrier portion 3 and a portion of the rear wall of the envelope is preferably strengthened or reinforced by means of a strip 5 of paper, gummed tape, or other suitable material. The flap 2 of the envelope has a transverse slot 6 formed therein through which the carrier portion is adapted to pass when the flap is closed, as indicated in Figure 1, whereby the flap will be maintained in its closed position. To open the envelope it is merely necessary to raise the flap and at the same time withdraw the upper end of the carrier portion from the slot 6.

Referring to Figures 4 to 7, the front wall of the body portion 1 of the envelope is provided with a transverse slot 7 adjacent its edge and the flap 2 is provided with a similar slot 8 adapted to register with the slot 7 when the flap is closed, as shown in Fig. 6. The carrier portion 9, which is similar to the carrier portion 3 shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, is extended downwardly below the edge of the rear wall of the body portion by forming slits 10 in the rear wall at either side of the carrier portion, the slits being of such length that their lower ends will extend below the flap of the envelope when in its closed position, as clearly shown in Figure 4. WVhen the flap is thus closed, the carrier portion 9 is passed through the registering slots 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 6, and as the lower end of the carrier portion then overlies the fiap, the latter will be held in its closed position. The envelope is carried by grasping the upper end of the carrier portion which projects beyond the envelope and is shaped to form a suitable handle 11. If desired asuitable reinforcing member 12 may be applied to the en velope as explained above in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3. To open the envelope it is merely necessary to withdraw the carrier portion from the slots 7 and 8, whereupon the flap 2 may be raised.

The envelope shown in Fig. 8 is similar 7, but instead of having slots formed in the body portion and ,the flap, as shown in Figs. 4 to 8, the envelope shown in Fig. 8 has a pair of alined slots 13 formed in the flap 2 and the carrier portion 14 is threaded I through these slots as shown, whereby the flap is held in its closed position.

It will of course be understood that the size and shape of the several carrier portions and of the handles may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.

While I have illustrated and described my invention in connection with several preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the specific embodiments shown, but that'I' intend to cover my invention broadly in whatever form its principle may be employed.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. An envelope including a body portion having a slot formed in the front wall thereof a flap having a slot formed therein adapted to register with the slot in said body portion when said flap is closed, and a car rier portion integral with the rear wall of said body portion adapted to extend through said registering slots to maintain said flap closed.

2. An envelope having a closure flap and comprising a carrier member of the material of the envelope, said member being shaped to provide a hand-hold portion at its outer end, and said envelope being provided with a pair of narrow slots through which the outer end of said member may be threaded successively to constitute a lock for the closure flap.

3. A receptacle comprising a body portion,

a flap portion extending from the face wall of the body portion, and an integral carrier member extending from the rear wall of the body portion to a position outside the receptacle when same is closed said receptacle being provided with a plurality of slots for receiving said carrier portion to hold said flap closed.

A receptacle comprising a body portion and an integral reinforced carrier portion, a flap for closing the opening of the receptacle, said body portion and flap being provided with slots adapted to register with each other when the flap is folded over said body portion, and said carrier portion having a width corresponding to thelength of said slots and being adapted to. be extended therethrough to maintain the flap in closed position and to extend above the top edge of the recepjtfacle when closed to provide a carrier there- In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature to this specification.
