CIGARETTE HOLDER.

This invention relates to devices for holding cigarettes or cigars while smoking the saine and while lighted incident to smoking, and for purposes of explanation, referb ence will be made hereinafter only to cigaretts holding, keeping in mind however that the device may be constructed also for holding cigars.

lt is one object of the invention to proio vide a new and improved cigarette holder embodying a ring to be worn on one of the users fingers, anda shank projecting from the ring and carrying cigarette-holding jaws and actuating means therefor, said 35 shank spacing the cigarette a safe distance from the hand to prevent accidental burning. Further objects of the invention are to provide novel atuating means for the jaws connected vin a unique manner therewith and 2o to make novel provision permitting easy assemblage of parts.

With the foregoing in view, the invention relates to the novel subject matter'hereinafter described and claimed, the description 25 being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 5 is an additional horizontal section` The numeral 8 designates a ring to be worn preferably on the forenger, and 9 denotes a tubular shank rigidly joined to and projecting radially from said ring. The major portion of the shank 9 is preferably of circular cross section, but the particular shank herein disclosed, is of square cross section at its u per end portion, and the upper extremity of) this shank is formed with a notch or recess 10 which opens through opposite sides of the shank as well as through said extremity, the opposed side Walls l1 of the recess 10, being preferably given a substantially three-quarter circular shape at their upper ends, providing ears 12. A pair of cigarette-holding jaws 13 have overlapping hinge knuckles 14 which are interposed between the ears 12, and a pivot pin 15 is passed through said knuckles and ears, said pin mounting the jaws 13 in such position that portions of the latter project laterally beyond the opposite open ends of the recessv 10. These recess ends are closed by plates 16 which contact slidably with the exterior of' the shank 9, said plates being pivotally connected with the laterally extending por tions of the jaws 13. This is preferably accomplished, by providing the plates with laterally turned upper ends 17 which engage the lateral portions of the jaws 13 and `are formed with openings 18, said lateral portions of the jaws being provided with curved hooks 19 which are received in said openings.

A jaw-actuating rod 2O is disposed within the shank 9 and is provided at its upper end with a head 21 received in the recess 10, the opposite ends of said head being rigidly joined to the plates 16,.in any desired Inanner. The shank has been shown as provided with an internal shoulder 22 around the rod 20, and a coiled compression spring 23, within said shank, has been illustrated between said shoulder and the head 21. Thus, the upward pressure of the spring, causes movement of the jaws 13 toward each other, but when the rod is pulled downwardly, opening of said jaws is effected, either for the urpose of inserting a ci arette or for disc arging a butt. At 26, a longitudinal portion of thenshank j 9 is cut away roviding an elongated lrecess. The upper end wall 27 of this recess is undercut and is provided with `a downwardly projecting lug 28. The lower end wall 2"(a of the recess 26 is preferably at right angles to the axis of the shank 9 and is formed with an upwardly projecting lug 28a. A transversely curved plate 29 fills the recess 26 and is shaped t0 contact tightly with all walls or edges of this recess, upper and lower notches 3() and 30l being formed in said late to receive the lugs 28 and 28a. The ower end of plate 29 is provided with an ear 31 which extends into the interior of the shank 9, and a pin 32 passes through said ear and through opposite sides of the shank. Thus, the plate 29 is effectively secured in place and is held against movement in all directions, yet if necessary, said plate may be removed to gain access to the inner end or hub portion 33 of the linger-piece 24. The construction just described however, is intended primarily to permit easy assemblage of parts, and it will be observed that the slot 25 through which the finger-piece 24 rojects, is formed in the plate 29.

o assemble the device, the rod 20 is inserteo' into the upper end of the shank 9 and the hub portion 33 of the finger-piece 24 is positioned in the upper end of the recess 26. The proportion of parts is such that the rod 2O may now be rotated to thread its lower end into the hub 33, while the plates 16 are above and cannot strike the ears 12. When the rod and the finger-piece have been thusv connected, the hooks 19 cf the jaws 13 may be engaged with the openings 18. Then, the knuckles 14 are alined with each other and positioned between the ears 12, being held y the pin 15 which is now inserted. The upper end of thel plate 29 may now be engaged with the undercut end wall 27 of the recess 26 and said plate rocked into o-perative position to fill said recess, the fingerpiece 24 being passed outwardly through the slot 25. Now, upon insertion of the pin 32,

.all parts are quickly assembled and held against possible accidental disconnection 'from each other. Yet, if repairs should be necessary, the part-s of the device may be readily disconnected by a skilled workman.

The device may be obviously used to advantage, while the hand upon which it is worn, is free for use in other capacities than merely holding the cigarette. Moreover, if the device is taken from the finger and laid down with a burning cigarette held by the jaws 13, the burning end vof said cigarette will not Contact with the surface upon which the cigarette and holder have been laid, due

I claim 1. A cigarette holder comprising a tubu lar shank, a pair of jawspivoted to one end thereof, a finger ring secured to the other end of said shank, a rod within the shank V havin pivotal connection with both jaws, a spring within the shank acting on said rod to normally close the jaws, and a thumb piece projecting laterally from the rod near said ring, the shank being formed with a slot through which said linger-piece passes.

2. In a cigarette holder, a tubular shank having a transverse-recess in one end which opens through opposite sides of'said Shank and communicates with the interior of said shank, a pair of jaws pivoted at their inner ends to the recessed end of the shank, said jaws having portions projecting outwardly from said opposite sides of the shank, two plates slidably contacting with said opposite sides of the shank and closing the ends of the recess thereat, means pivotally con# necting said plates to said outwardly projecting portions of the jaws, and a jaw-actuating rod in the shank having a head in the aforesaid recess connected to said plates, inward movement of said rod serving to open the jaws. .j

In a cigarette holder, a tubular shank having a transverse recess in one end which opens through opposite sides of said shank and communicates with the interior of said shank, a pair of jaws pivoted at their inner ends to the recessed end of the shank, said jaws having portions projecting outwardly from said opposite sides of the shank, two plates slidably contacting with said opposite sides of the shank and closing the ends of the recess thereat, said plates having laterally projecting end portions contacting with said outwardly projecting jaw portions and formed with openings, hooks on said jaw portions passing through said e openings'and .pivotally connecting the jawsl and plates, and a jaw-actuating rod in the shank having ahead in the aforesaid recess connected to said plates, inward ymovement therefrom at said recess, a transversely curved pate filling said; recess and shaped to ti htiy Contact with the walls thereof, said ate ybeing formed with a notch snugly receiving 5 the aforesaid lug and also having a slot through which said finger-piece passes, an inwardlyextending ear on the end of the plate remote from-said notch, and a pin passing through said ear and the shank to secure the plate in place.
