The present invention relates to a pump and has for its prime object to provide an exceedingly simple construction that is compact in its formation, and thoroughly efficient and reliable in its operation.
Another very important object of the 1nvention lies in the provision of a pump of this nature which utilizes a single check valve.
A still further very important object of the invention lies in the provision of a pump of this nature which is inexpensive to manufacture and operate and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides 1n certain novel features of construction, and 1n the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 5 denotes a cylindrical casing having a suitable closure 6 threaded or otherwise fixed to the other end thereof. Suitable tubing 7 is coupled in any preferred manner such as at 8 to the upper end of the cylindrical casing 5. Intermediate the ends of the casing 5 there are provided a plurality of openings 9. A vent pipe 10 leads upwardly from the lower portion of the casing 5 to a point above the openings 9 exteriorly of the casing and above the level of the liquid in which the casing 5 may be placed. The letter P denotes generally a plunger which in the present instance comprises a cylindrical hollow body 11 having packing rings 12 on the exterior thereof for engaging the interior surface of the casing 5 as the plunger moves rectilinearly up and down in the casing. The head 14 closes the lower end of the body 11 and is provided with an opening 15. A disk check valve 16 is adapted to seat in the recess 17 about the opening on the upper side of the head 14 to have prongs 19 depending therefrom provided with outwardly extending terminals to limit the upward movement of the check valve. A head 20 is engaged to-- the upper end of the body 11 and has a central opening 21 for receiving a rod 22. The lower end of the rod is hollow as is indicated at 23 to form a bore communicating with the interior of the body 11. This hollow portion of the rod has a plurality of openings 24:. The lower end of the hollow portion of the rod is threadedly engaged with the opening 21 and the upper ends may be suitably engaged with rods for imparting a rectilinear upand down motion to the plunger P in the cylindrical casing 5. It will be seen that the lower portion of the Cars ing 5 will be filled with water or other liquid to be pumped, said liquid flowing inside the casing through the openings 9. As the plunger P moves downwardly the check valve 16 will open and the fluid will flow into the body 11. Upon the upward movement the check valve 16 will close and the vacuum below the plunger will be relieved through the vent pipe 10. When the plunger has moved above the openings 9 further fluid will flow therethrough into the bottom of the casing 5 so that when the plunger P is again moved downwardly, the valve 16 will be opened and the fluid in the plunger will be forced up through the tubular portions 21 out through the openings 24 and the body 11 will be again filled. It is now thought that the construction and operation will be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. It will be seen that the pump is exceedingly simple and compact in its construction and will operate in a thor oughly efficient and reliable manner. Owing to the minimum number of movable parts there is very little about this pump to get out of order.
An embodiment of the pump has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It is apparent that changes in the details of description, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is A pump structure of the class described opening exterior of the casing, a plunger slidable in the casing, said plunger coinpris I ing a hollow cylindrical body, a head closing the lower end of the body provided Withan opening, a check valve associated with the 10 opening, a head closing the upper end of the body, a tube connected with said head and provided with a plurality of openings.
