Be it known that I, RALPH H. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Lift Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an air lift pump and my invention consists in the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an oil well showing my air lift pump in use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4-:L,
of Fig. 2.
The oil well casing 1 is set in the oil well and has an overflow spout 2 extending from its upper end. The plunger 3 is inserted downwardly into the casing 1 and is supported from the bottom of the oil well by a standard 4.
The details of the plunger 3 are as follows: A pipe section 5 has radially longitudinally extending slits 6 near its upper end. A head 7 has a nipple *8 screwed into the lower end of the pipe 5 and a nipple 9 extending downwardly to screw into the standard 4. A section of pipe 10 has radial longitudinal slits 11 formed near its lower end, a coupling 12 is screwed upon the lower end of the pipe, and a plug 13 is screwed into the coupling 12. A coupling 14. is screwed upon the upper end of the pipe 10, a nipple 15 is screwed into the coupling 14;, and a bushing 16 slides upon the pipe 10 and is screwed into the upper end of the pipe 5, said bushing 16 having a smooth bore 17 fitting the pipe 10. The pipe stem 18 is connected to the nipple 15 by a coupling 19 and the stem 18 extends to a point above the top of the well.
When a source of compressed air is connected to the upper end of the stem 18 the air will pass downwardly'through the stem 18, outwardly through the slits 11, upwardly inside of the pipe 5, and outwardly through the slits 6 and raise the oil in the casing 1 until it overflows through the spout 2.
The coupling 12 engaging below the bush-,
ing 16 holds the pipe 5 in place relative to the stem 18.
Thus I have produced an air lift pump comprising a barrel having vertical radial slots in its upper end, and an air pipe extending down into the barrel to near the lower end of the barrel and having vertical radial slots in its lower end.
In Fig. 1 the standard 4 comprises a standing valve cage 20 into which the nipple 9 is screwed, and the standing valve construction 21 is anchored in the casing 1 be low the cage 20.
When the plunger is attached to a standing valve as in Fig. 1 the valve will open when the oil is flowing and when the machinery stops the valve will close and hold the column of oil in the casing.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
In an air lift pump, a vertical cylindrical barrel having vertical radial slots near its upper end, a base clOSing the lower end of the barrel, a bushing in the upper end of the barrel, a pipe slidingly mounted through the bushing and having vertical radial slots near its lower end, and means closing the lower end of the pipe and forming a stop to hold the pipe from being drawn through the bushing.
