11 Claims.
This invention relates to a double acting pump. The pump of the present invention is especially adapted to be used in deep wells, any wells 300' in depth, or more.
It is my object to provide a double acting pump wherein uid is delivered by two plungers which are interconnected so as to operate in conjunction with one another.
It is another object to provide a pump of the foregoing type wherein the two plungers are connected by a reciprocable hollow member which functions vto deliver uid to a chamber associated with the upper plunger and to deliver fluid from a chamber associated with the lower plunger to the delivery outlet.
Another object is to provide a pump of the foregoing type wherein the working parts may all be` removed from the pump by merely pulling the sucker rod upwardly out' of the well pipe;
this single operation withdraws the entire Work` ing assembly from its operative position so that it can be adjusted or repaired without going to the inconvenience of pulling the well pipe.
Another object is to provide a double acting pump which is so constructed that` all sealed vacuum space is eliminated whereby the plunger is relieved of any undue load and the necessity for provision of check valves or other moving parts between the upper and lower plungers is eliminated.
Still other objects will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a pump sucker rod.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the position of the parts on the down stroke of the sucker rod and its associated parts.
Referring to the drawing in detail, reference numeral I designates the pump casing which is connected at its upper end by coupling 3 to a well pipe 2, and at its lower end by a coupling member 4 to a pipe 5 which extends downwardly in the well. Coupling 4 is internally tapered and receives a correspondingly tapered collar 6 which is provided at the lower end of the working assembly. Tapered collar 6 is thus adapted to be wedged tightly into coupling 4 and thereby to support the working apparatus in tight engagement in the outer casing during operation of the pump.
The sucker rod 'I is screw-threadedly engaged with an upper plunger designated generally as 8 which is provided with a valve 9 adapted to allow passage of water from below plunger 8 into space D above plunger 8 but toi prevent the reverse fiow of water. Upper plunger 8 is provided with sealing washers I0 and carries a cage II provided with spaced arms I2, the upper portion of cage II limiting upward movement of valve 9. A spring I3 normally presses valve 9 into closed position.
A lower plunger designated generally as I4 is provided having sealing washers I5. Plungers I4 and 8 are interconnected by hollow tube I6 so that they reciprocate together. Tube I6 passes partially through plunger i4 and communicates with the space therebelow. Lower plunger I4 reciprocates within an inner casing within which plunger I4 is sealed by washers I5. Inner casing I' is normally stationary and is slightly smaller in outside diameter than the inside of outside casing I so that it is freely slidable therewithin when it is desired to remove the assembly upwardly by pulling on the sucker rod 1.
Disposed between upper plunger 8 and lower plunger I4, there is provided a sealing assembly designated generally as I8 which divides the space between plungers I4 and 8 into a space A adjacent plunger 8 and into a space B adjacent plunger I4. On pulling sucker rod 1 up beyond its normal position of reciprocation, plunger I4 strikes adapter 23 of sealing assembly I8' and then causes the whole working assembly to lift. Sealing assembly I8 comprises a main member I9 and a member 29 screw-threadedly attached thereto. This assembly is provided with sealing means 2|, sealing it with respect to hollow tube I6 and preventing passage of liquid upwardly or downwardly along the exterior of hollow tube I6. Sealing assembly I8 is further provided with sealing means 22 which seals it with respect to outer casing I. Thus spaces A and B are sealed relative to each other. Sealing assembly I8 is fixedlyY attached to the upper end of inner casing I'I by means of adapter 23 which is screw-threadedly engaged with member I9 and also Wit-h the inside of inner casing Il. In this way, sealing assembly I8 is stationary during the operation of the pump.
At its lower end, inner casing II is provided with a cage 24 which screw-threadedly engages on 4its exterior the bottom of inner casing Il and -sembly relative to outer casing I.
on its interior the upper portion of lower collar li. Between cage 24 and collar 6, there is provided a sealing washer 34 which seals the assembly with respect to outer casing I. Cage 24 is provided with upstanding arms 25 which enclose a check valve 26 normally held in closed position by spring 2l which presses against the upper portion of cage 24. Tapered collar E is provided with a passageway 28 which allows liquid to freely pass upwardly through check valve 26 when that valve is open. Check valve 2t prevents liquid from passing downwardly as will be obvious.
A space C is formed within inner casing Il between plunger I4 and. check valve 26. This space C is interconnected with space A by means of tube I5, passageway 29 and ports 30 formed in the lower part of plunger 8. PassagewayZl is in direct communication with check valve in plunger 3.
In order'tolallow free movementof tube I6 and associated lower plunger I4 within the space B, means is provided connecting ythis'space B at all times with the exterior of outer casing i l, `so that the `fluid surrounding outer casing I may pass into and be expelled from space B during operation of the pump. This venting means comprises holes 3l provided in the casing I an-d in free communication withholes 32 provided in sealing assembly member with an elongated annular space designated `generally as 33 which surrounds tub-e I6 and extends through adapter 23 intocommunication with space B. An annular passagewaySIa is provided in member I9 so that ports 3l arealways in communication with ports 32 regardless of the angular disposition of the working as- Thius, as plunger l2 moves up and down, air or the liquid being pumped, suchas water, flows into and outof space B.
In operation, upward-movement of sucker rod 'I draws water through foot or check valve 26 into space C by means of plunger I4 while plunger 8, because of its valve 9 lbeing closed, lifts water into thewell pipe 2; -At the same time, plunger draws water through tube IIi into space A, and plunger I4 forceswater or air out of space B through ports 3 I.
On the down stroke, check valve 26 is closed and plunger I4 forces liquid from space C through tube I5 and upwardly through valve Sin upper plunger 8 into space D, and at the Sametime plunger 8 forces liquid from space A through ports 3H up through open valve 9 into space D. In addition, on the down stroke, a uid, such as water or air, from outside of casing I is sucked through ports 3I, 32 and passageway 33 into space B by the downward movement of plunger I4.
Thus water is discharged upwardly out of well pipe 2 on both the upstroke and the clown stroke. Water is discharged on the upstrokeby the lifting kaction of the plunger "8 and on the down stroke by reason of the fact thatthe water contained in spaces C and A is greater in volume than the downward displacement of plunger 8, that is, than th-e increase of volume of space D attendant upon the downward movement of plunger 8. i

By the present invention, numerous advantages are attained other than the advantage of increased capacity and of pumping on both upstroke and down stroke. Among these is that the assembly is completely removable up through well pipe 2 as above described, and the provision of venting -means for space B eliminates the vacuum in space B and any necessity for a relief valve in .connection with the same.
It will be understood that I desire to include within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt the same to varying conditions and uses.

A double acting pump comprising an outer casing, a reciprocating upper plunger in sliding engagement with the inner wall of said outer casing, stationary sealing means below said upper plunger and having resilient portions engaging said outer casing, an inner casing positioned within the outer casing and containing a lower plunger, upwardly opening check valve means leading into the space between said lower plunger, a hollow tube passing through said stationary seal and connecting said plungers and providing a fluid passageway from the space below the lower plunger to ports arranged in communication with the space below the upper plunger, vents in said outer casing, venting means carried by said stationary seal between said resilient portions connecting the space above said lower plunger with said outer easing vents, and valve means in said upper plunger for allowing fluid to pass from said chambers to a point above said upper plunger.

check valve means located below said lower plunger and opening upwardly into the space below said lower plunger, common means passing through said stationary means providing iiuid communication by means of a port opening between said chambers and connecting said plungers so that they move together, valve means in said upper plunger for allowing fluid to pass therethrough from said chambers to a point above said upper plunger, vent means in said outer casing, and means carried by said stationary means between said portions for venting the space formed between said lower plunger and said stationary means, said stationary sealing means aligning the venting means carried thereby with the venting means in the outer casing.

A pump comprising an outer pump casing, an inner pump casing positioned within said outer casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the outer pump casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the inner pump casing, means for rigidly interconnecting the plungers, sealing means transversely traversing the pumping chamber between the plungers for separating the working area of the outer casing from the working area. of the inner casing, said sealing means having resilient sealing members, means providing fluid communication between the working areas of the plungers, a foot-valve supported by said inner pump casing and a head valve carried by the upper-most plunger.

A pump comprising an outer pump casing, an inner pump casing positioned within said outer casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the outer pump casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the inner pump casing, means for rigidly interconnecting the plungers, sealing means supported by said inner casing and resiliently engaging said outer casing interposed between the plungers for separating the working area of the outer casing from the working area of the inner casing, means providing fluid communication between the working areas of the plungers, a foot-valve supported by said inner pump casing and a head valve carried by the upper-most plunger.

A pump comprising an outer pump casing, an inner pump casing positioned within said outer casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the outer pump casing, plunger means in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the inner pump casing, means for rigidly interconnecting the plungers, sealing means supported by said inner casing interposed between the plungers constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with said outer casing and for separating the working area of the outer casing from the working area of the inner casing, means providing fluid communication between the working areas of the plungers, a foot-valve supported by said inner pump casing and a head valve carried by the upper-most plunger, said inner pump casing being supported within the guter pump casing by means of the foot-valve ody.

A pump comprising an outer casing including a separate support member carried upon the lower end of said casing, and a working assembly in said casing comprising an inner casing postionedwthinirsaid*outer casing, a plunger in slidingengagementtwith said innerv casing, a plunger in slidingengagement ,with said outer casing,` means. for p rigidly. interconnecting saidy plungers; l sealing. means; interposed between said plungers carried lby said inner casing and in resilient engagement withrsaid outer casing, a footevalve supported by said inner/casing, a head valve `inthe upper-most plunger, means for providingl luid, intercommunication between the working .areas oftsaid plungers, and means for supporting 4said inner. ,casing uponsaid support means,.,said working nassembly beingl removable upwardly as a unit, .said sealing means and said upper` plunger means being` removable from said outercasin'gvby sldingthe same upwardly out ofiv engagement. with said outer casing.
