My. present. invention relates to improvements in display boxes by means of which fruits, such as packed dates, and other commodities that are packed in boxes for ship ping, may be displayed, while inthe original package or box, in an attractive and at the same time sanitary manner. By the utilization of the principles of my invention the original packing boxes for the packed fruit, may be converted for use with a specially constructed and specially applied lid or cover, which lid or cover, when applied to the converted box or package will permit display of the fruit or other packed contents of the box, and at the same time facilitate access to the enclosed commodity when de-,
In the accompanying drawings I have ilf lustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accord V with the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the princie ples of my invention. 7
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a-display box involving the principles of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the closed box, showing bydotted lines the lid or cover turned back to open position to give access to the contents of the box.
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view of the lid or cover detached and separated from the box. r
Figure 4: is a detail sectional view showing the bottom of the box, and particularly the ledge at the front of the bottom section, with which ledge the lid co-acts as will be described. I j
The date-box illustrated in the drawings is of rectangular shape having the usual bottom 1, rear or back wall 2 and the square ends 3, 3. The box may be especially constructed in this manner, or a packing box may be altered by removing the original top and. front walls, but in; any event, the
bottom is provided at its front with a projecting ledge 1 that is formed by terminating the front edges 5 of the box ends 3 the required distance back of the front edge of the box bottom 1.
The lid or cover is provided with a top and front portion that take the place of the corresponding portions that are omitted from box body, and the lid is provided with hinge or pivot pins 6 passing through holes 7 in the ends of the lid and secured in the opposite ends of the box. The top of the lid comprises a rectangular frame 8 and glass panel 9 therein, and the front of the lid comprises a'similar frame 10 and glass panel 11, through which panels the contents of the box are visible although the lid or cover is closed. 7
When the lid or cover is closed as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, it will be noted that the bottom bar 12 of the front frame or sash 10 of the lid fits snugly in contact with the top face of the projecting ledge of the bottom of the box, and the front frame of the lid lies flush with the front of the bottom to present a finished appear- ,ance for the display box.
The top frame and the front frame of the I lid are braced and connected at their ends by means of angular plates 13, preferably of metal and of general L-shape. These angular plates or end plates of the lid are fashioned with attaching flanges 14 and these angularly disposed flanges of the end.
plates are secured to the respective top and front frames of the lid by means of screws orfnails 15 that pass through the flanges and into the material of the frames.
The end plates of the lid lit snugly against the outer faces of the box ends and close the openings between the edges of the box ends and the frames of the lid, as well as forming braces for the lid.
It will be noted thatthe hinge pins or bolts 6 pass through holes 7 in the end plates of the lid andthese holes are located in such position that when the lid is turned back to open position as in "dotted lines Figure 2, the rear bar 16 of the top frame contacts with the back or rear wall 2 of the box, and thus the bar and back Wall co-act to stop and support the lid when it is turned to open'position for gaining access to the interior of the box.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- a The combination in a display box having closed ends and open at its front and top and having a projecting bottom forming a front ledge, of a lid having a front frame adapted to seat on said ledge and a transparent panel in said frame, a top frame and transparent panel therein, angular end plates 10 attached to said lid-frames and located at Wall of the box, to form a stop for the frame.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. e
ERICK EASPLUND.
