This invention relates to sheet inserters.

Objects of this inventionare to provide a sheet inserter for binders provided with prongs for the reception of apertured sheets, particularly for the type of devices known as visible record binders.

In devices of the type mentioned above, it is the usual custom to arrange the sheets in overlapping relation with successive marti gins exposed. It has been found that where it is necessary to insert additional sheets, difficulty has been experienced in getting them properly positioned and impaled upon the prongs. Y

This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above and objects of such invention are to provide a sheet inserter upon which the sheets may be easily arranged by laying the device flat upon the table and positioning the sheets as desired,

and in which means are provided for retaining the sheets temporarily against removal from the inserter so that the inserter may be lifted bodily and manipulated to impale sheets upon the prongs of the binder in the desired relation, the parts of the inserter being thereafter easily removed.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with parts broken away showing a series of sheets carried thereby.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the device.

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the device comprises a main plate l and an auxiliary or retaining plate 2 adapted to temporarily hold the sheets against displacement. The main plate 1 is provided with a series of regularly spaced short posts 3 and with intermediate slots 4 opening through the adjacent edge. The posts 3 are adapted to be passed through certain of the apertures or perforations 5 of the sheet 6 with the slots et alining with the intermediate perfor-ations. The sheets are assembled upon t-he main plate 1, as indicated in Figure. 1, and thereafter the retaining plate 2 is positioned over the sheets opposite the plate 1.' The plates 1 and 2 are provided with interengaging fastening means for temporarily holding them in their relative position. For example, the plate 1 may be provided with posts 7 adjacent its ends which fit within apertures 8 formed in the plate 2. It is to be noted that the plate 2 has its rear corners cut away,as indicated at 9, to expose the corresponding corners of the plate 1., Further it is to be noted that the plate 2`is provided with outwardly pro- The two plates are then held together and the sheets inserted in the flexible record binder, the prongs of the binder passing through the slots 4 and the alining perforations of the sheets. The inserter with the sheets thereon is then rocked over onto the prongs ofthe record binder so as to position the plate 2 lon the lower side and the plate 1 on the upper side of the inserted leaves. Thereafter the operator retains hold of the exposed corners of the plate 1 and allows the retaining late 2 to drop while he lifts the plate 1 off? He thereafter withdraws the plate 2 in a simple and easy maiiner. For example, he may slide it endwise, if desired.

It will be seen that the device can be very readily handled even by an unskilled operator with absolute assurance that the inserted sheets will be arranged in the binder in the desired sequence or order.

Further it will be seen that the device can be very cheaply constructed.

Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.

I claim 1. A sheet inserter for a loose leaf binder provided with impaling prongs, said inserter comprising a mainV plate of rectangular contour having a plurality of posts adapted to enter certain of the perforations in the sheets, said main plate having notches between said posts alining with other of the'perforations of said sheets and having projecting posts spaced from said first mentioned posts, and an auxiliary retaining plate adapted to be positioned opposite said first mentioned plate and adjacent the edges of said sheets, said auxiliary plate having` apertures for the reception of said last mentioned posts and having eut-away rear corners to expose corresponding corners of said first mentioned plate.

2, A sheet inserter for a loose leaf binder provided with iinpaling prongs, said inserter comprising a inain plate of rectangular contour having a plurality of posts adapted to enter certain of the perforations in the sheets, said main sheet having notches between said posts alining with other of the perforations of said sheets and having' projecting posts spaced from said first mentioned posts, and an auxiliary retaining plate adapted to be positioned opposite said first mentioned plate and adjacent the edges of said sheets, said auxiliary plate having apertures for the reception of said last nientioned posts and having cut-away rear corners to expose corresponding corners of said first mentioned plate, said auxiliary plate having projecting manipulating ears eX- tending beyond the outline of said main plate.

3. A sheet inserter for binders having prongs for the reception of perforated sheets, said inserter comprising a plate having a plurality of spaced posts adapted to enter certain of the perforations of the sheets and having a plurality of slots open ing through one edge and alining with other of the perforations of the sheets for perniitting the passage therethrough of certain of the posts of said binder, a retaining plate adapted to extend across a portion of the sheets opposite said first mentioned plate, and means for temporarily holding said plates in their relative positions.
