CASTING MOLD.
Application filed August a, 1925. Serial No. 48,917.
This invention relates to molds for casting metals and pertains more particularly to molds having interchangeable dies, whereby metal objects of several different shapes may be cast in the same mold.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mold, in which metal objects of the same shape may be cast rapidly and conveniently, and in which the diesfor forming various portionsof the objects may be replaced and production of a. differently shaped object resumed without delay.
Other objectsand advantages of the in vention will appear hereinafter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
F igure 1 is atop plan view of the ap paratus, the parts of the mold being shown in position for casting. v V
. Figure 2 is a top view of the apparatus, the parts being shown in position for ejecting the work. g Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1. i
Figures 4 and 5 are perspective views of two forms of object adapted to be cast by the mold.
Figure 6 is a plan view of one or the rnold parts.
casting battery straps for electric storage batteries is disclosed, and in the following description particular reference will be made to this type of apparatus, although it will be understood that the inventionis susceptible of use in other connections.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus comprises a base plate 1 having legs 2 adapted to be secured to a table or work bench by means of the screw 3 passing through the feet 4. Partof the base plate 1 is provided with a flat surface 5 which forms in most cases one of the walls of the mold. On the opposite side of the base plate an Opening 6 is provided through which the work may be ejected in a manner hereinafter described. Under-eath the surface 5, the base plate is cut away in orderto reduce the weight of In the embodiment of the invention illus trat-ed in the drawings, an apparatus for the mold, but the ribs 7 remain to reenforcc the plate to provide adequate strength, and also serve to some degree to radiate heat to keep the mold at a relatively cool temperature during use.
At the back of the base plate 1 is mounted a bolt 8 serving as a pivot or axis about which the two side molds 9 and 10 may swing. Each of the side molds 9 and 10 is provided with an aperture through which the. bolt 8 passes and thebolt is provided with a nut 11 to hold it in place.
Eachof the side molds 9 and 10 is permitted limited oscillation with respect to the base plate. movement in one direction being opposed by the abutment 12 and movem-ent in the oppositedirection being opposed by the abutment 13 as described more particularly hereinafter. Each of the side molds is provided with a removable wooden handle 14 by which the sections may be swung as desired by the operator.
Battery straps as ordinarily used in different storage batteries vary considerably 1n their detail, although nearly all such straps are of the same general contour. For instance, certain straps are provided with a comb 15 as illustrated in Figure 4, while other batteries require the plain straps 16 as illustrated in Figure 5. require that the shank 17 be provided with a standard screw thread as illustrated in Figure 4, while Others require a square thread, while still others as illustrated in Figure 5 require no thread whatever.
It is proposed according to the present invention to provide means by which the dies for forming the straps and their shanks be replaced by different dies of any desired shape so that any combination of particular strap and particular shank may be produced with a single mold.
' For this purpose in the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein the side mold 9 is provided with a slot 21 having bevelled sides 22 in which dies 23, which may be formed in any desired shape, may be held. Similarly the side'mold 10 may be provided with a slot 24 having bevelled sides'25 in whichimatching dies 26 may be held. As
Certain batteries will be observed, the interior contour or" the dies 23 and 26 may be of any desired design, such that standard threads, square threads, or no threads may be formed in the shank of the strap to be cast.
Lying between the bottom face of the si le mold 9 and the suriace 5 of the base plate 1 is a die 27 loosely secured to the side mold 9 by means of the screw 28 which serves to cen'ralize the plate with respect to the die 26. @n the other side of the mold and lying between the bottom .iace of the side mold 10 and the surface 5 of the base plate is a die 29 centralized with respect to the side mold 10 by means of the screw 30. As will be ob served, the die '29 may be removed and re placed as desired by another die having any desired contour "for forming the strap in the desired shape, as for instance one die 29 is provided for casting the positive strap and another for casting the negative strap.
in casting battery straps, the operator first determines the characteristics of the particular strap which he wishes to cast, and inserts in the mold die 29 of the desired shape. Thereafter dies 23 and 26 having the desired characteristics may be inserted in the slots 21 and 24. The operator then grasps the handles 14 and closes the sections 9 and 10 of the mold and moves the sections in closed position until the section 9 is stopped by the abutment 12. In this position, illus trated in Figure 1, the mold is ready for pouring. After the metal is poured and the work has become set, the handle to the section 9 is moved to the left while the plate or die 27 is held by the abutment 12 which die 27 holds the casting and thus permits the operator to free the casting from the die 23. Then the handle of the section 10 is moved to the right until stopped by the abutment 13.
In order to completely free the work from the mold, means are rovided to eject the work as the handle 14 is moved to the right to move the side mold 10. For this purpose the die 26 is provided with a plunger 31 passing through an opening 32 in the die and having a head 33 adapted to seat on the shoulder 34. In order to normally hold the plunger in its retracted position the compression spring 35 is provided, one end of which bears against the nut 36 on the outer end of the plunger 31 and the other end of which bears against a washer 37. lVhen the side mold 10 is swuno; to the right the outer end of the plunger 31 strikes the abutment 13 compressing the spring and forcing the plunger through the die against the work and at the same time the plate or die 29 comes against the lower abutment-so that the casting is freed from the mold 25 and dropped through the opening 6.
By proper manipulation of the handles 14 the sections of the mold may again be swung together and moved to the position shown in Figure 1, in which position, the mold is again ready for pouring.
t is to be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
