Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CLARENQE W. HAZE- LE'I'T, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certaln new and useful Improvement in Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description.
This invention relates to apparatus for casting storage battery parts. While the invention is described and illustrated as applied to making a certain type of lead casting, it will be evident to one skilled in the art that by suitable variations the apparatus may be adapted for making other forms of castings either from lead or othe materials.
In molding small lead castings of the type shown for storage battery purposes, an apparatus is usually. used comprising two small die blocks which the molder fits together ins or other accessories are then fitted in t .e mold to provide means for producing thedesired shape of cast-' ing. After the lead is poured in the gate the core pins are removed, the blocks separated and the casting removed from the side of the mold in which it clings. This method of operation requires considerable handling of the component parts of the mold and is therefore slow and tedious.
Inasmuch as the mold parts become hot after casting a few pieces they are troublesome to handle. It is furthermore generally difficult to remove the article from the mold because it sticks in one side or the other and requires hammering the mold to loosen it.
The object of my invention is to eliminate the previously mentioned disadvantages and to facilitate molding of such parts.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of the apparatus with the mold closed.

cylinder end and the other face 3 bolted or otherwise fastened toa table or support of any suitable nature The adjacent ends of the cylinders are similarly closed by angular members 1 having legs 5 resting on the table. The end closing members 4 are rigidlv joined by means of a heavy smooth inetal plate 6 fastened to each of the legs 5. In the center of plate 6 an opening 7 is out which 1s preferably circular. Piston rods 8 connected with the piston heads 9 of each cvllnder 1 pass through the ends 2 and are fastened to the center of plates 10. Rods 11 and 12 pass through holes in the ends of each of the plates 10 and are rigidly fastened therein .by nuts 13 and 14 placed on either side of the plates. The rods 11 and 12 extend on either side adjacent the cylinders 1 and have nuts 15 and 16 fitted on the threaded ends 17. Air pressure is applied through pipe 18 to move the pistons in opposite directions against tllGjtCtlOn of springs 19 placed in the cylinder. WVhen the air pressure is released the springs cause the pistons to approach and close the mold. It will be evident that instead of air pressure and spring pressure any other means could be used to operate the pistons.
The portion of the apparatus just described will be permanently fastened to an operating table 'and will receive various movable portions for casting different articles. These parts will be fastened to the operating elements by means of the four pairs of nuts 15 and 16 fitted on the ends 17 of the rods 11 and 12.
The removable part of the apparatus consists of two bars 20 and 21 having slots 22 (Fig. 4) which receive rods 11 and 12 to which the bars are fastened by means of nuts 15 and 16. The two halves of the mold 23 and 24 are fastened by means of bolts 25 to the bars 20 and 21 respectively. The lower surfaces of the molds slide on the flat surface of plate 6 and when the inner-surfaces having the outline of the article therein are pressed together a perfect oint is formed at the parting line 26. The gate 27 is cut in the surface of one orboth sides of the mold adjacent the parting line.
The mold parts 23 and 24 have suitable openings 28, 29 of the same diameter or 'shape as corepins 30, 31 which fit therein and project into the mold forming cavitles to provide the desired configuration. The core ins are adapted to be fitted on threaded mem ers 32, 33. Each of these has an enlar ed portion 34 havin a slot therein 1n which are placed two lin s35, 36 which are pivotally connected together by a pin 37. The other ends of'links 35 and 36 are connected to bars 20 and 21 by pins 38 and 39. To center the two cores 3O and-31 one may be pointed and the other have a depression 40. l 5 A centering member 41 preferably cylindrical in shape,'has a projection '42 closely fitting in the hole 7 of the plate6 which serves to hold the member 41 therein. The portion 41 rests on the surface ofthe plate and is of the same cross section as the openings in the bottom ofthe mold parts. By cutting away the edge of the centering mem-' 'ber adjacent the plate 6, and the edge of the .die 24 adjacent the plate 6 at the parting line, spaces 50 and51 (Fig. 4) are provided vin which dust may accumulate without pre- .venting the dies from closing. Instead of :cutting away the edge of the centering member, the corresponding edges of the dies may 1be removed to provide spaces '52 for dust as shown in Fig. 8.
, In the modification shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the centerin member is provided with an opening 43 for receiving a screw 44 which 45 will be cast in the article. The modification of. Figs. 6 and 7 differs from that of Figs. 1 .to 5, in having an opening 45 in the center- .ing member 41 which servesjforreceiving a ortion'of the casting rather than a screw w ich is yeast in the molded 'artlcle.
In Fig. 8 a modification-is shown in which the centering member .48 is held in theplate "6 by a nut 46 fitted on a rojection 47 passthrough the plate, 6. he centering projection "48 rojects into the'mold forming cavity. a su cient distance to produce an ad "ditional .hole in the casting. The lower part .of the centering member is a counterpart of the opening formed. in the .bottom of the mold when the two parts are pressed together.

use of the centering member thus prevents sticking in either side. The centerin member remains .in place for molding ad itional articles. It will be evident. t-hat in casting the article shown in Fig. 5 which has a :double taper, the cores will be readily withdrawn.
The mechanism described may provide a .very considerable force for pulling the core pins and separating the dies so that very little draft is required.
The modifications shown in Figs. 6 and .8, further illustrate an important feature of my invention, namely a centering member .serving simultaneously for centering .the
moldfparts and retaining the casting when the mold parts are separated, whereby it :does not stick in either side. In Fig.- 16 this is done'by casting a portion ofthe article in the centering member so thatQthe. partprojecting therein serves :the same purpose as the pin 44 fitted in the opening 43 of the previously described modification. .The
"sticking tendency in'this case is also so;slight that the loose centeringmember is not; lifted 125 out of'the hole 7 in plate 6.
In 8 the centering. member has an upper portionwhich servesrthe purpose of a member from being lifted from the plate when the article is drawn therefrom, a nut 46 is threaded on projection l7.
While I have illustrated several modifi cations, other modifications embodyingmy invention may be used for making various articles but after the foregoing disclosures such will be evident to one skilled in the art. The invention is obviously not limited to casting a double taper post as it can be used in casting other types of posts.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In apparatus for casting articles, a plate, a mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming two openings when the mold is closed, one opening bein adjacent said plate and the other on one side, a projection fitted to the plate having a depression for receiving a portion of the article, a core pin adapted to be fitted in the side opening, and means for separating the mold parts and withdrawing the core pin.
2. In apparatus for casting articles, a' plate, a mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming two openings when the mold is closed, one open ing being adjacent said plate and the other' on one side, a projection fitted to the plate adapted to register with the first mentioned opening, said projection having a depression for receiving a portion of the article, a core pin adapted to be fitted in the side opening, and means for separating the mold parts and withdrawing the core pin.
3. In apparatus for casting articles, a
plate, a mold'divided into'two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming three openings when the mold is closed, one opening being adjacent said plate and the other two on opposite sides, a rojection fitted to the plate adapted to register with the first mentioned opening, said projection having a depression for receiving a portion of the article, a pair of core pins adapted to be fitted in the side openings, and means for simultaneously separating the mold parts and withdrawin the core pins.
4. In. apparatus for casting articles, a plate, a mold divided into two parts, each having a cavity, said cavities providing three openings when the mold is closed, one opening being adjacent said plate and the other two on opposite sides, a movable piston connected to each of the mold parts, a projection fitted to the plate adapted to register with the first mentioned-opening, said projection having a depression for receiving a portion of the article, a pair of core pins adapted to be fitted in the side openings, means for simultaneously applying pressure to the pistons to separate ,the mold parts, and means for withdrawing the core pins.
5. In apparatus for casting articles, a
plate, a mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavlties forming two openings when the mold is closed, one opening being adjacent said plate and the other on one side, an arm extending from each mold part, a piston connected to each mold part, a projection fitted to the plate adapted to register with the first mentioned opening, said projection having a dep-ress10n for receiving a portion of the article, a core pin adapted to be fitted in the side opening, a pair of links connecting the core pin to the extending arms, and means for applying pressure to the pistons to separate the mold parts and simultaneously withdraw the core pans.
6. In apparatus for casting articles, a plate, a mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming three openings when the mold is closed, one opening being adjacent said plate and the other two on opposlte sides, a projection fitted to,
arm of each mold part, asecond pair oflinks connecting the other core pin to the other arm of each mold part, and means for applying pressure to each of the pistons to 1 slmultaneously separate the mold parts and withdraw the core ins.
7. In apparatus or casting articles, a mold divided into two part each-having a cavity,
of the combined parts when the mold is closed, a core pin adapted to be fitted in said opening, an arm extending from each mold part, a pair of links connecting the core pin to the arms of the mold parts, and means; for separating the mold parts whereby the core is simultaneously withdrawn from the opening.
8. In apparatus for casting articles, a mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming openings on two opposite sides when the mold is closed, a fpair of arms extending on opposite sides 0 each mold part, a pair of ,core pins adapted to be fitted in the side openings, a pair of links connecting a core pin to an arm of each mold part, a second pair of links connecting the other core pin to the other arms of each mold part, and means for separating the mold parts whereby the cores are simultaneously withdrawn from the openings.
9. In apparatus for casting articles, a
mold divided into two parts each having a cavity, said cavities forming openings on said cavities forming an opening in one side pair of arms extending on opposite sides of each mold part. a" piston connected to each mold part, a'pnir of core pins ndzlpted to be fitted in the side openings, at pairof links connecting a core pin to an a rmbfeach mold part, a second palr of links connecting the other core pin to the other imn of each mold part, and means for applying pressure to "each of the pistons to simultaneously se'parate't-he niold parts and withdraw the 10 core pins.
