UNITED STATES THOMAS H. DONNELLY, OF DOVER, NEW
KNOWLES LOOM. WORKS,
MASSACHUSETTS.
Application :filed April 29,
This invention relates to a'tool to facilitate the repair of harness and pattern mechanisms more particularly of the type set forth in patent to Knowles No. 186,530, and it is the vprincipal ob]- ect of the invention to provide a device simple in construction and operation which shall be effective to hold the vibratorlevers and connectors of pat tern mechanisms of the type specied in such position as will permit the ready removal of the comb which separates the vibrator levers.
The so-called Knowles head comprises a pair of spaced positively rotating mutilated cylinder gears between which lie a plurality of thin vibrator gears each of which 'is mounted on a vibrator lever. yThese levers are separated by means of a comb fixed to the frame ofthe head and it sometimes happens that the dents of the comb become broken, in which event a new comb must be supplied. It is necessary under such circumstances to hold all of the vibrator levers in raisedposition where they will not interfrere with the removal of a. broken comb and the replacing of a new one and it is usual practice for loom iXers either to block up the vibrator lev rs or to remove them from the loom. This has been. found to be a time-consuming operation and it is a more particular object of my invention to provide a bar which is passed under some part of the vibrator lever or gear and supported so as to hold the vibrator levers in raised position. v
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described yand set forth in the claims. p
In theaccompanying drawings wherein I have shown a convenient embodiment of my invention. o
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of aKnowles head having the top cylinder vremoved and with inyinvention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fie. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows toward the comb, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool.
Fig. et is an elevation view, partly sectional, of the tool.
Referring to the, drawings it will be seen that I have shown a loom frame having PATENT OFFICE.

OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF troon non KNowLEs Looivis.

arches 11 to which is secured a head frame 12. Said frame is provided with upper and lower cross bars 13 and 14, respectively, and supports on the outer end thereof a heel pin 15. Mounted for limited movement on the heel pin isa plurality of vibrator levers 16 which extend inwardly from the'heel pin and have rotatably mounted thereon vibrator gears 17. Each of said gears is provided with an arcuate slot 18 concentric with the stud 19 about which it rotates and :there is further pivoted to each vibrator gear as at 2O a harness connector 21 which is' attached to a harness jack 22 operatively connected to the harness (not shown) of the loom. Y
In order` lto hold the connectors 21 down there is pivoted tothe head frame as at 23 plurality of drop weight levers one of which is indicated at 24 in Fig. l. Each of said levers is engaged by a spring pressed plunger 25 held in a frame 26 secured to the arches of the loom.
A lock knife 27 ispivoted as at 23 to a xed part of the loom frame andmoves toward and from the-,end 29 of the vibrator lever 16 by well-known mechanism not shown, being moved away to permit uninterrupted movement of said levers as the same are raised by pattern mechanism indicated at 30. Each of said ends 29 of the vibrator levers is guided by a comb 31 the dents 32 of which are shown more'particularly in F ig. 2. Said comb is provided with depending arms 33 which may be secured as at 34 to the lower cross bar let'of the head c frame. y Y
In order to actuate the gears 17 there are usually provided a pair of actuating cylinders whichiit in upper and lower bearings v35 and 36, respectively, the lower cylinder 37 being shown and the upper one being removed. Under normal conditions the vibrator gears are raised and lowered by the pattern mechanism 30 to be actuated by the upper yand lower cylinder gears according to the requirements of the pattern'or weave. The matter thus far Vdescribed is the usual form of Knowles head.
lt occasionally happens that the Acomb 31 lwill become broken or rendered useless, in which case it must be replaced and in this event I provide a tool which can be employed for raising all of the vibrator levers lmoval of the comb 31. khold the vibrator gears in raised position 16. As shown in the drawings said tool comprises upper and lower bars 51 and 52, respectively, which are sufliciently long to extend beyond the front and back portions :of the head frame 12 as shown in Fig. 2.
lpart of which is threaded a thumb screw `raise the rod 52 and ends 29 of the vibrator levers 16 suticiently 'to permit Vconvenient rerIhe rod 52 will without further attention on the part of the operator and if desired the scr-ew 54- can be turned to lower the ends 29 slightly so as to position the dents 32 of the new comb.
The lstraps 53 can be slid along bars 51 and'52` to permit. the tool to Abe used' with heads of different widths and said bars are interchangeable, either bar being adapted to rcooperate with the vibi'ator gears or with the bottom half of beai'ing I do not wish to be limited to the particular means 'shown for supporting the lower rod nor Ito any particular part of the vibrator and gear which is to be in directengagement 'with the lower rod.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple device for holding the vibrator gears of the wellknown 'Knowles head in raised position to facilitate the replacement of the comb, the `use of the device i'endering removal of the vibrator gears from the head' unnecessary. It will further' be seen thatthe drop weight levers 241, the normal function of which is to hold the connectors 21 down, will serve to prevent accident-al upward displacement of the rodsv 51 and 52 befoi'e the vibratoi' gears wish to'be'limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is:
1. A tool for use with a loom pattern mechanism having bearings in the upper portion thereof for a cylinder', a plurality of vibrator levers and vibrator gears therefor each provided with an arcuate slot and having' also acomb for spacing the vibrator gears, said toolV comprising a pair of spaced rods one of which is received in the bearing and the other of which passes through the arcuate slots in the vibrator gears, ,and
means supported by the rod in the bearing to hold the bar'passing through the gears and the gears supported thereby in raised position. f 2pac tool for use withA a loom pattei' mechanism having bearings in the upper portion thereof for a cylinder, a plurality of vibrator levers and vibrator gears therefor each provided with an arcuate slot and having also a comb for spacing the vibrator gea-rs, said tool comprising a pair of spaced rods one of which is receivedin the-bearing and the other of which passes through the arcuate slots in the vibrator gears, and
means supportedby 'the i'od in the bearing to raise and hold the bar passing through the gears'and the gears supported' thereby in raised position. f
3.151 tool for use with a loom pattern `mechanism having bearings in the up 3er portion thereof for a cylinder, a plura ity of vibrator levers and vibrator gears there? 'for each provided with an arcuate slot and having' also a comb-for spacing the vibrator gears, said tool vhaving a `member to beA received by the bearing and having a second membertopass through the aligned arcuate slots of the gears, and elements surrounding said members and supported by the upper' member, whereby the said upper member supports the lower member and the gears held thereby.
4. A tool for use with a loom pattern mechanism having bearings in the upper portion thereof for a cylinder, a plurality of vibrator levers and vibi'atoi' gears ytherefor each provided with an arcuate slot'and having also a comb for spacing thevibrator gears, a pair of spaced rods one of which is received by the bearing and the other of which passes through vthe aligned'slots of the vibrator gears, hollow holding members for the ends of the rods surrounding the latter, and a screw passing through'said holding members into the hollow portions thereof to engage one of the rods and effect relative movement thereof with respect to the other rod.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.`
