AGTUATING MEANS FOR THE HEDDLE-FRAMES 0F WEAVING-LOOMS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FERNAND Houen'r and LOUIS RAHIER, both subjects of the King of Belgium, residing, respectively, at Verviers and at Ensival-Verviers, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented new and useful Improvements in Actuating Means for the Heddle-Frames for \Veaving- Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and connected with heddle frames for looms in which the heddle frames are actuated solely from below for instance by means of racks and toothed pinions and in which the frames are fixed on cross bars extending under the entire length of said frames.
The present invention has for its object to provide particularly simple and practical means for effecting, as desired, the setting in place and removal or replacement of the heddle frames when they are actuated from beneath for instance by means of pinions and racks.
WVith this end in view the invention consists in that the heddle frames are fixed on the cross bars, which extend under said frames by means of connecting members fixed to the lower cross bar of the frame and cooperating with similar members fixed to the cross bar extending under the heddle frame, each of said members being provided with projecting ends and a recess adapted to receive the corresponding projections on the other member.
The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 illustrates the mechanism actuated by rack and pinions. Fig. 2 is a separate side elevation on enlarged scale of the connecting members or locking parts of the heddle frame with the actuating cross bar. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 is shown the heddle frame 1 carrying the heddles 2 through which pass the warp threads. In conformity with the invention, 3 i a cross bar extending longitudinally on which the heddle frame 1 is attached by means of connecting members or locking parts 4, 5, 6, and 7. Each bar 3 is provided with two racks 8 and 9 respectively engaging toothed wheels 10 and 11 pivotally mounted on the fixed spindles 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

rotation by a rod 14L carrying at each end a toothed part also engaging with the toothed wheels 10 and 11. The rod 14 is supported by guides 15 and 16, whereas the racks 8 and 9 are guided by fixed pins 17 and 18. The movement of the rod 14: may be effected in any convenient manner, for instance by a vertical hook 19 carrying a toothed part engaging with the wheel 10, said hook recelving the desired up and down movement by suitable driving means, 2'. e., by knives of the type frequently used in weaving looms.
The heddle frames are guided at the sides thereof by pins 20 carried in supports 21 adapted to be displaced on the lugs 22 so as to approach the uprights of the heddle frames 1 or move away from said uprights and approach the lugs 22 of the loom in order to disengage the heddle frames 1 which may of course be guided in any convenient manner so as to prevent their rocking at right angles to their plane.
When it is necessary to replace the set of heddle frames by another set appropriate to the new cloth desired to be manufactured, it suffices to displace the lefthand support 21 to the left toward the lug 22 situated on the same side so as to move the guides 20 on this side away from the upright of the heddle frame. The heddle frames 1 are then moved toward the left hand lug 22 and by this means the locking members 1, 5, 6 and 7 are disengaged from one another so that it is only necessary to lift the heddle frames out of the loom. The setting in position of the new set of heddle frames is effected in the same manner. They are placed in the loom and held slightly toward the side of the loom where the guides 20 are disengaged and are then pushed so that the locking members 4 and 6 approach the locking members 5 and 7 In view of the special form of these locking members, as hereinafter described, the attachment of the heddle frames 1 on the bars 3 can be easily effected in the determined position. It is then only necessary to replace the support 21 of the pin guides 20 which prevents the displacement of the heddle frame and the disengagement of the locking members.
Figs. 2 and 3 show separately the locking members or attachment parts. The locking members a and 6 are attached to the heddle frame 1, whereas the locking members 5 and 7 are fixed to the bar 8. The locking members have each a projection A which can engage in the other locking member and at the end of the projection is a recess B which at the instant'when two corresponding locking members are pushed one into the other receives a projection C of similar form to the recess. The projections A thu rigidly attach the heddle frames 1 to the bars 3; the recesses B and the projections C compel the heddles and the bars to lie flush so as not to present any projecting parts between the heddle frames. These devices consequently allow a rapid exchange of a set of heddle frames the work for which is ended, for another set of heddle frames and their instantaneous mounting in the desired position for these heddle frames in the loom.

In an actuating mechanism for heddleframes of weaving looms, in combination with a heddle-frame, a lower shaft for said heddle frame, an actuating bar, connecting members between the lower shaft of the heddle frame and the actuating bar, said members comprising two parts, one fixed to the heddle-frame and the other on the actuating bar, each of said parts being provided with a projection and recess, and meansineluding a rack and toothed wheel drive for actuating said bar, substantially as described.
