This invention relates to seaming mechanism for closing containers and has for its main object and featurethe simplification of parts combined with such an arrangement that the same parts can readily be used for different sizes of machines, or different sizes of containers.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is embodied in a concrete and preferred form in which the work stands still and the seaming tools have both a rotating move ment around the work and an in-and-out movement with respect thereto, but, in accordance with well-known practice, the work may rotate and the seaming tools may be stationary except for the in-and-out movement.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view on the plane of line 11 of Fig. 2.

1 indicates a chuck, in the. present case stationary, there being a corresponding pedestal below (not shown) for the reception of the work. 2 is a head, in this instance rotatable as by means of gears 3 and 4. 5 is a seaming cam, also rotatable as by means of gears 6 and 7, the cam making eighteen revolutions to the cycle and the head seventeen so that there is one effective revolution of the cam per cycle of operation.
7 8 is a seaming tool carrier in the form of a bell crank and having at one end a cam roll 9 and at its other end a seaming tool 10. The carrier is pivoted intermediate its ends by the following means: Carried by the head at its periphery is a dependent boss 11, and 12 indicates a cover plate on the boss, the carrier being held between the head'and the cover plate. 13 is a pivot passing through the cover plate, bell crank and head.
14 is an extension on the bell crank at an angle to one of the arms thereof and substantially parallel to the other, and this extension is of such amplitude that a bearing for a seaming tool spindle may be drilled at optional points to admit of the same parts being used for different sizes of machines. The seaming tool spindle is indicated at 15 and is surrounded by an eccentric sleeve 16 adjustable by means of head 17 To lock the sleeve in position there is provided a bolt 18 extending at an angle to and intersecting the sleeve, having at that point a cut-out por tion 19. It will be understood that by tightening nut 20 thereby drawing bolt 18 up the eccentric sleeve will be held from rotation. The extension is also of such amplitude that the opening for bolt 18'may be drilled at optional points to correspond with the location of the spindle bearing.

The number of seaming tools to be employed may vary, but in the present instance two suchtools are employeda first operation seaming tool and a second operation seaming tool, and these tools act successively on the work in a manner well understood. The two seaming tools are exactly alike except that the bell crank forming the second operation seaming tool has one of the arms of the bell crank split as at 22 and a spring 23 is associated therewith so as to admit more readily of the second operation seaming tool passing over the side seam of the body.
I claim:
1. Seaming mechanism including: a head, a bell crank, constituting a seaming tool carrier, pivoted intermediate its ends on said head, means for supporting said bell crank on said head consisting of a dependent boss at the periphery of the head, a cover plate carried by the boss, the bell'crank being held between the head and the cover plate, and a pivot passing through the cover plate b-ell crank and head, a cam roll at one and a seaming tool at the other end of the bell crank, and a cam to engage the cam roll to turn the bell crank on its pivot.
2. Seaming mechanism including: a seaming tool carrier having an angular extension of such amplitude as to admit of locating a bearing for a seaming tool spindle at optional points, a seaming tool spindle mounted in the extension, an adjustable eccentric sleeve surrounding the spindle, and means carried by the extension for locking the sleeve in its adjusted position.
