Description
G. LEWlNSON.
Package-Holder.
Patented June 1,1875.
UNITED STATES- PATENT Orrron.
GUSTAVE LEWINSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKAGE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,935, dated J une 1, 1875; application filed January 6, 1875. v
To all whom it may concern :v
Be it known that I, GUsrAvELEwnvsoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Package- Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view, representing a package of pencils put up in conformity with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, representing my improved holder detached. Fig. 3 is a transverse section across the package of pencils.
My invention has for its object to provide a unique device in which pencils, pen-holders, and other articles in any desired number may be packed and held for transportation and exhibition; and my invention consists in a holder composed of two end pieces or caps connected by an elastic or non-elastic cord or band, the opposite ends of the pencils, &c., grouped together, fitting snugly into these caps, and being securely retained in place therein by the elastic or non-elastic cord wound or otherwise disposed around them, a suitable label, if desired, being placed upon the pencils, 850., and confined thereon by passing the cord over it, by which means I am enabled to pack pencils and other articles in a novel and attractive form, which better exposes them to view and enhances their sale.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
' one dozenby which contrivance the loss of time heretofore incurred in counting each individual pencil is avoided, the contents of a full package being readily known from the size of cap employed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention enables me to put up pencils, penholders, and various other articles in a neat and stylish package, which improves their ap pearance, and which may be broken by removing one or more without causing the remainder to become loose and fall out of their holder, the elasticity of the cord or band being. sufficient to keep them always snugly together, irrespective of their number.
The caps b protect the ends of the pencils, &c., and elevate them from the place upon which they rest, whereby they are kept from contact therewith throughout their entire length.
The caps may be of any determined size or shapefor instance, circular, diamond, or other formto correspond to the number and form of the articles to be packed, and, instead of one cord wound around, as shown, two or more cords, having their ends connected with the caps b, and either wound around the articles in the package or extending directly between the caps in a longitudinal direction, may be employed, and the cord may be inelastic, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention; but I prefer the holder when constructed as first described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The within-described holder composed of the two end pieces or caps 12 b, connected'by a cord or band, 0, substantially-as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a package consisting of a number of pencils or pen-holders, the caps b b, united by one or more cords or bands, 0, substantially as described.
' WVitness my hand this 2d day of January,
GUSTAVE LEWINSON.
In presence of- N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
