The present invention relates to the manufacturev ocigar boxes and the like, and more particularly to the type where the box is made of wood, paper board, or a combination of the two and provided with edging which covers the vertical corners, horizontal bottom corners, and also the upper edges' of the vertical wall and edgesI of the cover. An object of this invention is to provide for economically applying the edging to the boxes. Another object of the invention is to combiinJ the edging with labels so as to dis with a separate application et the labels. Still another object of the invention is to provide for applying to the cover or lid of the box a combined edging and label formed from a single piece of material.
ATo these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parte and combinations of parte, all of which will be hereinafter set constructed in accordance with this invention with a part of the lid or cover 'being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a perspective rear view cfa box constructed in' accordance with this invention with part ol' the lid or coverfbeing broken away;

Fi 4 is a. plan view o the edging blank for t e rear wall of the body;

a top .view of the cover with the/ Fig. 7 is combined labeling and edging blank applied thereto; and
Fig. 8 is a rear view of the box'beiore In 'the manufacture of cigar boxes it has been the custom for years to trim the corners or edges of the box with edging formed from separate pieces or' material, to apply these pieces separately by hand, and then to apply the labels to the box over this edging. This method of edging a box vand the application of labels thereto hasnecessitated a large number of operations which have added materially to the cost of manufacturing cigar' boxes. Furthermore, this method has prevented the edging and labeling of the boxes by automatic machines.
According to this invention the edging is so formed that the number of operations required in applying the same is reduced to a minimum. At the same time labels are combined with. edging and the whole is formed so that the edging and labelin may' behandled by automatic machinery. the
illustrated embodiment of the invention the edging and labeling for the box and its cover or lidare formed by tive sections or pieces. The front edging section piece illustrated inFig. 3 is in the form of a blank 1 with a central opening 2. This blank has at its lower edge a portion 3 foldable on a line 4:v
to provide with the lower portion of the blank the edging for the lower front corner. The blank also has a portion 5 foldable on the lines 6 and'? to provide with the adjacent portion of the blank the edging for the upper front edge of-tlie box. This portion '5 is shorter than the portions 3 and lies between the two lips orrexteiisions 8 on the' blank 1. These extensions or lips are utilized to cover those portions of the lend walls Q of the box which project above the front 'and rear walls 10 and 11, respectively. For
covering the rear wall of the box a blank 13 is provided which has a portion 14: foldable on a line l5 to extend over the rear portion of the bottom of the box. blank at its top edge has a shorter tongue 16 ioldable on the lines 17 at thehinge of the box and on the line 18 at the rearvcorner of the cover of the box the tongue overlying This.'
the rear top surface of the cover on opposite,
sides of this tongue 16 tongues or extensions 19 are provided to cover those portions of the end walls projecting above the rear wall.
The end sections 23 illustrated in Fig. 5 of .which there are two, each has a, lower portion/24 oldable on a line 25 to extend over the bottom ofthe box, the sections'23 also each having a portion A,26 foldable on lines" 27 and 28 to cover the upper edges of t-lie box, theportion 26 having shoulders 29 at opposite ends beyond the folds 27 so that those portions of the end `walls above the 'front and rear Walls of the box may be covered on their inner sides by the portions 30 between the shoulders 29 and the fold 27. Tongues 153'* may be provided at opposite ends of thewblanks oldable on the lines 13b 33 hess e. 'wide lip or .providing a label on the inner face of the to overlap lfrontend reer'tvells. The y y the cigars.
The lid or coverBZ may be labeled and edged by the blank on its inner fece and edged by the blank 33 Shown in Fig. 5. rlbis f blank has portions 34 on three sides foldable on the ylines ,35 and '36 so as to extendl over the ed v7es of the lid or cover and onto the top face t 'ereo At its other edge, the blank label extension 3? for rear Woll of the box. l
In labeling and edging the box the end sections 2re first applied. Thereafter, the front section l is lapplied. This provides edging for the 'front and end walls. The cover or lid being e lseparate piece hee the section 33 applied thereto soV that before it is applied to the box body, it has the appearence shown in Fig. 6. The lid or cover is then secured to the rear -Wall of the box by e strip 38 of cloth or similar materiel snob es is commercially used, the parte after the application of the hinge having an appear- 'ance such as shown in Fig. 8. After the hinge is set the section 13 is applied to pro vide edging for the rear Well and the rear portion of the cover,
This invention reduces the number of operations required in edging cigar boxes end the applying of labels thereto. The 'label and edging for the cover or: lid are formed in one piece, except Jfor the rear edge of the cover or lid. The edgings for the four vertical walls'are formed in our separate pieces with .portions provided for extending eboiit the top' edges of such wells and onto the bojttoni. This construction makes it possible to odhesively secure the hinging strip directly' to. the material of the box body and `the l. ln combination with a. cigar box lid, e
combined label and edging blank' having ai rnain portion covering the inner face of the lid and provided with tongues on three sides Vextending around three edges of the lid en onto the top surface thereof5 the hinging edge of the box or lid being exposed for the attachment of a hinging piece.
2. l'n combination with e cigar box lid, e
combined label and edging blank having e mein portion covering the inner face of the lid and provided with tongues on three sides, extending around three edgesA of the lid and onto the top surtece thereof, the hingirny edge 'of the box or lid being exposed for the attschinentof e hinging piece, and a label extension' on the bottom portion of the blank for attachment to the inner fece of the rear wall of o box.
3. The `combination with n box body and a lid hinged thereto, of e. combined labeling and edging blank having a main portion secured to the inner face of the lid, edging portionsextending from said main portion around the edges of three sides of the lid and onto the rear side of the lid, and :i label extension extending from the main portion downwardly and secured to the inner fare of the rear well of the box body.
il. ln combination with a, cigar box havinga. hinged cover7 of an edging blank for edging' the roer Wall of the box having tongue portions edging the rear top fare of the cover adjacent the' hinge and the rear bottom fece of the bot-tom of tliebox and separate edging ineens for the other three edges of the cover.
