ACID-RESISTING COMPOUND.
No Drawing.
My. invention is a composition'of matter forming a hand protection from acids. An
object of my invention is to rovide'a mixture of ingredients which wi 1 form a good 5 covering body for the hands, will remain.
thereon without becoming rubbed off, except when it is desired, to remove the com 081- tion, and further to form a composition which will have a neutralizing action on acids. My composition is of particular use in storage battery stations.
My composition is an improvement over my application for an acid resisting compound, Serial No. 8,293, filed Feb. 10, 1925.; In thisoomposition I use a large proportion of a covering agent such as used in paints and dpreferably use white lead. This is dilute with an evaporating oil such as gasoline and baking soda, and after this mixing resin is added. To maintain the composition in the desired consistency I mix a small amount of caster-oil, eucalyptus-oil and alcohol.
My preferred composition is made substantially as follows :-and in substantially the following proportions :for instance, one-third pound of white lead which is thinned by mixing it in the proportion of ninety-two per cent of the white lead to eight per cent of linseed oil. When the white lead has beenthoroughly ground in the oil, it is mixed with a light solventsuch as a very quick evaporating gasoline, about ten ounces being used. The whole mixture so far produced has added thereto, while being mixed and stirred, baking soda of the quantity of .one pound. This is kept well mixed. I V
Commercial resin such as a turpentine 4o resin to the quantity of.one-half pound is heated: until it will flow readily when one quarter. of an ounce ofcastor oil is added. This resin and castor-oil mixture is removed from the fire and-the white'lead, as thinned with the gasoline, is mixed therewith. This combined mixture is stirred for about half a minute and'the'n at intervals of about half a minute-until it size S working which for the .quantity' usufily' takes about ten In this operation it will become stiff and grainy to prevent .which alcohol to i ,the quantity of about ten ounces. and one .quarter; of an ounce of eucalyptus-oil is added ,before it becomes too 'stifi to stir.
is Most of the gasoline evaporates in the Application filed A ril 20, m. Serial No. 24,677.
heating and mixing operation, but the oils. and the alcohol maintain the composition as a thin paste. It is preferable to use grain alcohol. When this is applied to the hands it will dry quickly, leavinga thin film which will wear for a long time in ordinary use of the hands in handling storage batteries,-
etc. The paste thoroughly protects the hands, particularly from. sulphuric and hydrochloric acid. My composition may is restated to comprise the following ingredients in the proportions named, approximately:-
White lead one-third of a pound, baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) NaHCO 1 pound, commercial resin one-half pound, one-quarter ounce castor-oil, one quarterounce eucalyptus-oil, .and ten ounces of grain alcohol, (ethyl alcohol). The resins used may be of the colophony or copal type or other suitable light resins.
The above mentioned composition may be considerably changed in proportions and other ingredients may be added. Also for convenience the hands may be covered with Vaseline before the mixture is applied.
Having described my invention, what' I claim is 1. The method of forming anv adherescent acid proof composition comprising mixing white lead with linseed oil. and thinning with gasoline, adding baking soda thereto and mixing, and as a separate step heating resin and adding thereto castor oil, combiningthe white lead and baking soda-mixture with the heated resin and mixing, and fi- .nallly thinningwith alcohol and eucalyptus o1 2. The. method of claim '1, in which white pound, castor oil one-fourth ounce, eucal tus oil one-fourth ounce and alcohol su cient to form a paste;.
In testimon whereof I aflix in Si ature. WTON H. SCI-DYE I ER.
