United States Patent 3,251,740 COSMETIC PAINTS, PARTICULARLY FOR EYELASHES AND EYEBROWS Helene Kambersky, Vienna I, Hegelgasse 6,
Vienna, Austria No Drawing. Filed July 3, 1962, Ser. No. 207,390 Claims priority, application Austria, May 25, 1954,
A 2,997/54 7 Claims. (Cl. 167-85) I ing application Serial No. 509,399, filed May 8, 1955.
Fatty oils (non-drying) suitable for imparting the desired flexibility are typified by castor oil, olive oil, sunflower seed oil, palm kernel oil and the like. Castor oil This invention relates to cosmetic preparations. More particularly it is directed to mascaras for eye lashes and eye brows.
These pigmented preparations are applied in a pasty state to the eyebrows and eyelashes and dry to form a film. It is essential that the mascara be of such a composition that it will not irritate the mucous membrane of the eyelid or other parts of the eye both at the time of application and after drying.
Preparationsof this class are known which comprise emulsions of waxes with aqueous liquids containing, in addition, fats or fatty oils. Such compositions, however, dry only very slowly owing to their relatively high content of fatty substances and their tendency to smear. In consequence thereof, they are unsuitable for application to eye lashes. It has been proposed to use for such purposes, compositions comprising aqueous emulsions of waxes which contain a volatile oil, particularly turpentine, instead of a fat or fatty oil. These latter compositions provided much better adherence because the turpentine evaporated soon after the application of the composition, leaving a fine water insoluble film.
It has been found, however, that those preparations were effective only if they contained at least 50% of turpentine. However, when the turpentine is present in such high concentration, the presence thereof is readily observed because of its odor. Furthermore, its use is particularly objectionable because of its known irritating effeet on the skin and eyes. Attempts to reduce the turpentine content. and to increase, for example, the water content, resulted in products which became so brittle in a short while that the compositions crumbled away.
It has been found that the aforesaid disadvantages arising from preparations based on a high turpentine content can be avoided by the use of a cosmetic composition containing substantially less turpentine, i.e., at most about one-half of the turpentine previously used. The novel composition of this invention comprises an aqueous emulsion ofa suitable wax and turpentine in combination with a mixture of a drying oil and a fatty non-drying oil.
Small additions of turpentine, castor oil and linseed oil have been'disclosed before only fora hair treating compound, which is absolutely anhydrous and has a strictly fatty base and is intended-to increase the softness and luster of the hair of the head. Owing to its high tendency to smear, such a fatty cream is not suitable for cosmic paint. In a wax-containing aqueous paint emulsion such a combination has not been used before and offers additional advantages over the known compositions of that type.
I have discovered that the presence, in the instant cosmetic composition of a drying oil, such as linseed oil, results in the drying of the applied composition even when the content of the volatile oil, such as turpentine, is small;
is preferred because it is most readily emulsified.
The emulsification is effected by higher fatty alcohols or the sulfonates. thereof or mixtures thereof.
The compositions contain suitable pigmenting materials and may also include essential oils and perfume bases to impart a fragrance.
The mascar-as of this invention are prepared by emulsifying the several components with the addition of customary pigmenting substances and perfumes; and also, if desired, a substance which acts as a perfume base, such as terpineol. It is also suitable to admix an emulsifying agent to obtain a perfectly homogeneous mixture. In this connection, it is to be noted, that the usual water-soluble emulsifying agents, e.g., borax or triethanolamine have been found unsuitable, due to the high content of water required.
I have found that higher fattyalcohols such as cetyl alcohol and fatty alcohol mixtures known under the trademark Lanette, which may contain fatty alcohol sulfonates or fatty alcohol phosphates, or higher fatty alcohol sulfonatesthemselves or cholesterol esters may be used advantageously as emulsifying agents.
The following are examples in accordance with the invention:
