Description

g- 1927' E. H. ROBERTS PICTURE FRAME Filed QCQ. 26, 1925 Patented Aug. 2, 1927.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. ROBERTS, or KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
momma FRAME.
Application'fi led October 26, 1925. Serial No. 64,816.
My invention relates to picture frames and has for its principal ob]ect to provide a device of that character embodying means integral with the frame proper for holding a the glass, the picture and the mat in place- In accomplishing this object I have pros videcl improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, sectional per- 'spective of a portion of a picture frame constructed in accordance with -my inventhe glass, the picture element and'the mat,
shown in spaced but relative relation.
Referring more in detail to the drawings: 1 designates the frame proper which is preferably constructed from a single strip which the elements may be easily and quickof sheet metal, bent to form a siderail 2 having a front keeper flange 3, the strip being bent at the top and bottomto give it an, ornamental formation and the keeper flange being notched as at 4 tolpermit the .30 rail to be bent as" described.
When the frame is bent to the ornamental formatiomthe free ends meet and areconnected by. a welded patch 5 laid across the meeting edges of the jointand on the rear 5 surface of the frame, the joints at the bends being covered with ornamental patches 6 that may be welded or otherwise connected with the keeper flange."
Also connected with the frame member,
preferably by welding the same to the rear face of the keeper flange and to the inner face of the rail are straps 7 of pliable metal of such length that originally ,they project beyond the confines of the frame and may be bent back over the mat when the picture elements are assembled to hold the glass, the
p 1 picture and the mat in place. g I
Fitting within the frame is a glass 8, hav ing a central, forwardly bent panel 9 and a fiat edge'flange 10, the flange lying along the rear surface of the frame element within the rail and the bent portion projecting through the frame to impart an attractive and ornmental appearance to the picture when the parts are assembled. Lying back I of the glass 10 is the pictureelement 11,
here indicated by a blank panel, and lying back of the panel 11 is a mat 12 of usual construction.
, In assembling the elements of the picture in the frame after the frame proper has been formed, the glass is first dropped into the frame, the picture element applied back of the glass and-the mat applied back of the picture element. The straps 7 are then bent over back of the mat to press the elements together and hold them in close assembly.
I It is apparentthat this construction provides a neat, attractive and inexpensive frame in which the elements may be held with more than ordinary security and in ly disassembled if desired, without destroy- I ing' or impairing any of the parts of the structure. I
WVhat I claim ters Patent is:
a In a device for holding picture elements, a frame element comprising a strip of sheet metal bent longitudinally to form a side rail and a keeper flange and bent transversely to shape the frame, straps having flanges and adaptedfOr seating in the angles formed by rail and keeperflange ofthe frame, said strap flanges welded to the keeper flange, the straps welded to'a limited portion of the side rail that they contact, said straps being adapted for adjustable bending over the said picture elements to hold the same in the de vice.
